1987 Carrera Targa elevated stop signal placement question?

I have an 87 Targa which has the "third" stop signal mounted flush inside of the rear glass. When I purchased it there was a Porsche made whale tail on the car. No rear wiper. In various other photos I see other 87 Targas (Not Cabrios) with whalte tails with the stop light mounted on the decklid, "ET" style.

What decided the various mounting of these stop signals on cars of the same style and year? Curious?

Rear brake lights were compulsory from 1986 onwards. My 87 Targa has the stock version inside the rear window. Cabrios Came with "ETīs" head and were also retro fitted by many wanting the additional safety despite the questionable aesthetics
