Great looking car! Post some more pics when you have a chance. Personally, I would focus on lowering the car more than getting new wheels. Fuchs would look great on it, but a proper ride ride height will do wonders.

I used 7x15s all around on my car, all of $50 for each wheel and some time in the blast cabinet. |

I had the same problem figuring out what wheel to go with on my 67 912. I had the 14s on there first (not pictures in my thread) and it looked ok, but tires were a problem. Ended up at the end of the day with 15x7 cookie cutters as they are cheap, and good tire choices, and look great! I had bought a full set of 15x6 cookies for $120 locally but sold them and got 7s to work nicely with my flares. I always liked the steel wheel look though and may still get a set of those to have too!
Here is my thread in which a lot chimed in for in my decision making. Has some great pics of options: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/488187-help-me-style-beat-up-old-912-a.html Good luck! |
Thanks for all the help guys, I appreciate it.
As far as adding value to the car in this market I guess 14's are going to gain me nothing. I just recently got the car and am new to the early Porsche club, seems like this club can get real spendy quick. I hate getting burned like this by what I don't know, this reminds me of an ornate carved dog table I bought at an auction it was really cool and I liked the cravings, turns out it was made in Indonesian and was worth about half what I paid for it. It all turned out for the best though, now I can walk into a room and spot Indonesian furniture from 50 ft. away. And on a side note, I have a complete set of rare early wheels that came off a RS- RSR prototype it was built in 1969-71, the only thing left of the car was a the wheels, I'm asking 4000 dollars, which is a real bargain. |
Eli-
Don't be too discouraged by having overspent. Decide what your ultimate goal is when buying parts for the '69. Is it to add value, return to original, or to make you happy when you drive it? Everyone has their own strategy in personalizing these cars. For me, I would go with '69 date coded deep-6 wheels and spend the $$$ to get nice ones or have them restored by Harvey (not cheap either). That's not for everyone though. If you want Fuchs and don't want to spend big $, then 14" are just fine and to most people they aren't noticeably different from 15". In fact, I had a conversation this past weekend at a C&C with someone looking at a REALLY nice car and the guy said something looked different... it was the 14" wheels and he couldn't tell. Anyhow, my advice would be to go with whatever makes you happy. The only caveat would be to save all of the original parts that you take off. A '69E is a valuable car and there are a lot of '69 only parts that are hard to replace. The original bits will be valuable to the next owner. |
Very true, I had to track down a nos 006 MFI, to take the care back to MFI the stacks and most of the other parts are still there for the MFI. But that 69 MFI set me back three bills.
I want to add value to the car if and when I sell it. Would date coded deep 6 wheels do that? Deep 6s where made from 69 to 73 is that right? |
Yes they would, they are valuable off the car as well, $2k-$3k plus depending on condition/finish. Mint matching date original finish another $500-$1000?
Deep sixes were made from mid-late '68 to early '71, not too sure of the start dates, have seen pics of 8-68? Deep sixes with hearts until mid-late '70 and without hearts through 3-70. These are just my semi educated recollections. Find the build date for you car on drivers door jamb, wheels dated within a few months prior to that date would be correct for your car. Same numbers is best, then 3 of a kind, matched pairs then singles just like poker. If mismatched, dates closer together might appear better in presentation and possible correctness but not in real $ value. My original 5 matched date code 5.5" x 14" were 4-'70 and the build date for the car is 12-'70, so lots of leeway there. David |
I'm not sure if deep 6s would add to the value really since your car is suppose to have 14" wheels, and from a value perspective original is always better.

An E only came with 14' wheels if it was "comfort" spec'd correct? Maybe Eli said his car was spec'd that way on the COA, I can't remember.
I've got to disagree that deep 6s wouldn't add value. Most people want Fuchs on their car. Deep 6s are period correct and highly desirable. I'd expect this to attract buyers. |
E's came standard with hydro-pneumatic front suspension, if car came so equipped I wouldn't go there either. I think deep sixes' desirability (look, perfomance, tire choice) would trump 14's even if the car was delivered with them. That's just me.

I haven't gotten my COA yet it is on the way.
I'm going to try and take my time and think about this stuff more. I leaning to just gathering proper date match 6s and then refinishing them. First thing I need to do is get better tires on my cookies. The tires on them now have sat for 10 years. |

Just got my COA.
It is a mixture of good and bad and this is going to be a challenge. My 1969 911 E rolled off the line 12/20/1968. With leather seats( I just ordered vinyl, just great) Polo red What date range should I be looking for again on these fuchs? |
Getting the COA is going to be helpful long term. If you have a 12/68 build date, I'd be comfortable with Fuchs in The 8-11 '68 production date. Keep in mind that the factory used parts from the stockpile and the date ranges can be a little blurry.

Cool, one more thing the interior COA says the car had leather interior with a code of 9822.
Is that code for real leather? or leatherette? I have been trying to look it up with confusing results. |
Nothing about the wheels, I thought that was the topic of this thread?
Don't put too much trust in the accuracy of the COA, mine says my '71 came with "Cast Aluminum Wheel 7.5Jx16 and 9Jx16. I'd like to have that set. David |
