WARNING this is a Special PSA ( Pelican Service Announcement ), beep beep beep. Yesterday, while driving to my appointment I was coming down a hill on Capitol off of Western in RPV and I started to see orange cones and a warning sign to prepare to stop. 50 feet later a CHP officer in his Smokey the Bear hat, POINTED AT ME and directed me to pull over. WTD? I was on my bluetooth so it can't be that??? 20 feet later, a lecturn and a CAL TRANS Worker in orange vest, came up to me and said "Hello Sir" sorry to bother you but would you VOLUNTEER to have your car checked for smog? We are gathering data to see how our state licensed smog check stations are doing. I was like WTFFFFFFFF! ( talking to myself ) Think quick moron. in slow motion I said YYYEEEEESSSSS. I am saying to myself STOOPID MORON, it was voluntary. Oh no worries, as soon as I stopped SSSSSSSSSSing. I was dying inside since I was testing my bi-pass pipe ![]() I get out of the car, nice older guy so I knew he knew how to drive a cabled clutch, I asked. And he did, hewh, he was actually very gentle and commented how nice my car was, WHATEVER ![]() Damn it all , my car was cold too ![]() 30 feet later, he pulled her onto the Dyno and Sniffer. 5 minutes later (which seemed like 5 hours) I here, "SIR, can you come over here" while I see her being pulled off. "Sir, sorry to say your car FAILED" ![]() ![]() ."Good news, just barely over the limit on both HC & NO". I played DUMB, "really???" So I asked the tech, so what do you think it is? He replied,"well it is miss firing and not burning all the fuel and your CAT is struggling to burn off the unburnt fuel really?). It could be your spark plugs or O2 sensor or you may need a new CAT ( self = ok ). He said not to worry that I would need to just smog the next registration cycle ( 18 months ).I inquired, no mandatory call back or proof? "Nope you are free to go" have a nice day WTDDD?So after my appointment, I was so depressed then I re-read the print out and it clearly states that there is no consequence to this voluntary check by CAL DOT/DMV. But you know what, I don't trust them because all the others that declined it, were noted in the Tech computer. I am certain those will get a letter in the mail for a re-test at the DMV. FUDGE glad I volunteered. This has been a PSA..... Heck need a tune up anyways, damn will check again afterwards. P.S. They will be in Paramount today

Nice. Checkpoints, stopping people for no cause, "voluntary" submissions to random govt testing, entering the names of those who don't "volunteer" into the Govt computer.

That's a great story. Reminds me of the late great Harry Pellow and his stories of interactions involving his old Mercedes and the Cali. DMV. I can see Harry smiling down upon you at that check point!

Hey, Draco, your story made me laugh! Especially because I just had my SC smogged (bi-annual check) this morning! And, yes, it passed with its usual ridiculously low numbers...

I hope the state isn't planning something like what Paris France is thinking of doing.

Quote: Some of the most famous cars in French motoring history would be banned from Paris under a law intended to hit gas-guzzlers, but which is being criticized as a blow to the poor and classic car fans. The proposal to ban pre-1997 cars from the city center is the brainchild of Paris mayor Bertrand Delanoe, who was behind the popular Velib' bike-rental scheme but has been accused of turning the city of lights into a playground for the rich. Under the plan, such classics as the stylish Citroen DS, one of which was painted by Picasso; the Citroen 2CV, sometimes described as a tin snail; and the boxy but durable Renault 4L, along with less iconic models driven by ordinary Parisians who can't afford to trade up, would have to go. "This is for our citizens. It's a public health battle and we've been fighting since 2001 to try and make the air here more breathable," the left-wing mayor told councillors in Paris.

The state penalty for tampering with smog equipment is $1,500 per violation in California. If you take off the cat and the O2 sensor, they could charge you $3,000. That is for civil violations only. If you lie to a cop or inspector it can also add some jail time.

I think you made a good move with how you handled the situation. If I get lucky and find myself in one of "those lines" I do the same thing you did. Go with the flow. We setup the rules and system now we have to live with it. Just take a look at the average MPG the new Porsche's are getting with the power and torque they put out. UNREAL. Nice move, |
