When working on my 75 911S over the weekend, I noticed a bit of moisture where one of the six fuel injection lines enters the intake manifold. I was shocked to see that the line rotated freely where it entered the manifold, like it wasn't properly screwed all the way in. I was equally shocked to see that the other two lines on that cylinder bank (right side) were also loose and rotated freely, as did the rearmost line on the driver's side. (I didn't try the other two on the left side since the blower motor blocks access.) The engine runs fine. Is this normal? Or should all the lines be tightened? There is a hex fitting built into the bottom of each line, but I know better to ask before proceeding... the old adage "if it ain't broke..."

My 76 is exactly the same. I've been told it's nothing to worry about. Once the engine is running, those lines are pressurized and they become "taut". Start the car up and have a fiddle... they won't move much. When the motor's off, my fuel lines move vertically about 2-3mm. My mechanic tells me that it's perfectly normal. They're not screwed in. They are just pressed in with a round rubber o-ring.

Same as on my '75 911s, although last time my mechaninc told me that I need to replace the o-rings, since there is to much movement on the injectors. Apparently the cost of the parts is nothing and also labour is cheap. Just a pity that he didn't have the parts on stock.
Well just another job to carried out when the car goes to the shop on the 27th for a complete engine overhaul! |

You can squirt some carb cleaner on them while at idle to see if they are leaking, otherwise, no worries.

I just had my injector seals replaced and I experienced the same thing. They really felt like they were almost wobbling! The mechanic reassured it was sealed well and that this movement was normal. Wanted to pass that on, because I was somewhat frantic as well when I noted so much play. Regards BR '73.5 T "Home of the first CIS" |
