I'm setting up for re-installing my dual distributor on a '91 964 and I can't find a torque spec for the 8mm dist. hold down nut, anybody know? or make a edumacated guess?

The hold down nut on my '73 Datsun pickup is loose enough that I can rotate the distributor without loosening the nut further. Yet, the engine's timing does not change.
Now before anyone else says this, I will state that there is quite a difference between Datsuns and Porsches. but if your holddown nut is not unlike just about every other car I've ever seen, then I believe you just need to make it snug. Certainly, if you cannot rotate the distributor by hand, then it is tight enough, for sure. ------------------ '83 SC |

That's reassuring. I've always been convinced that the minute I back off slightly on the distributor hold-down nut the distributor will spin like a loom as soon as I start the engine. I like your system.

I don't know the factory specs, but I have removed and installed my distributor a few times, and I just snug it up good, maybe 5 ft. lbs. greater then where you can move it by hand. But I do believe the timing on your motor is set by the computer, therefore you should be able to just snug it, and it won't move, because of index where your distributor goes in. I hope I made sense, and I could be way off, but I know the 3.2 carrera's are this way.
When I set my timing on my motor, I always leave it so I can move it by hand with the motor running, then after I have it set, i tighten the holding nut. It has never spun on me. ------------------ Matt Chamblin 78 911 SC |
