To replace or not to replace?
I’m in the process of replacing my front rotors. I have the hubs removed from the spindles and the outer bearings cleaned and ready for re-packing.
On the back side of the hub is the following (see photo): Inner Bearing Radial Sealing Ring Spindle Spacer Ring O-Ring Does this sound correct? My question is: How do you remove the Spindle Spacer Ring and the Radial Sealing Ring? Should I replace these items when re-installing? Thanks! |

Huh? There's an inner seal and there is an inner and and outer bearing. Each of those bearings has a race pressed into the hub. The seal has to be removed in order to access the inner bearing. Typically, the seal is pulled and tossed, and both the inner and outer bearings are cleaned and inspected. Do not use gritty solvent (you'd be surprized how much solvent has grit) Brake cleaner works best. If the bearings or races show wear, or if they had been making noise, the races are pressed out and new races pressed in, and their matching bearings are used. Ideally, a press is used and the hub is heated so that the hub is not damaged. If you know this already, then 'nevermind.'

Unless it is scored, you don't need to replace the spindle spacer ring, or the o ring behind it. The spacer ring is pressed on the spindle shaft and you would probably need to remove the strut and use a hydraulic press to get the spacer off. As I recall, the grease seal (radial sealing ring) rotates around the spacer ring. I use a seal puller to remove the grease seal. You can buy one at the local auto parts store for about $9. The one I have is made by Lisle Tool Company. When reinstalling and repacking, make sure that you grease the inner circumference of the grease seal. Good luck.

I didn't realize the spacer is pressed on to the spindle. I thought it went inside the sealing ring. Thanks for the clarification. Thank you both for the pointers, I'll give it a go tonight. ![]() |
