Heat exchanger stuck

hey all, I could use some advise removing the heat exchanger from the left side of my engine (86 3.2). I have all the fasteners removed but can't unstick the thing. I've tried gentle prying with a piece of wood, tapping, beer more prying and tapping more beer but no success.

I had to remove both sides (HE) and the CAT as one unit on my '84. Make sure that you remove the O2 Sensor from the CAT first!.. I then disconnected the rubbers from the crossover pieces from the rear of the HEs and gently put my floor jack under the left HE. Just a LITTLE presure upwards and everything came out as a unit. It appeared as if over the years they had wedged upwards a bit. I did this with engine in the vehicle and only on jackstands. Put a boar4d or cushion of some kind on the jack before you put any pressure on it to save your HE from a dent.

Hope that this helps.

Thanks Capt. Could there be some sort of sealant used on the flange gaskets that would make them stick or am I just being a nana and need to use more force?

Yeah, mine were pretty stuck, but with some brute force, they came off.

The gaskets on mine appeared to be part of the HE when I finally got them (HEs) off. That was due to age I believe. I have no doubt that some sort of "goop" was used to install the gaskets years ago to keep them in place as one was trying to install the HEs.
HEs are a lot tougher than imagined if you work in the area of the actual exhaust piping inside of them.

Just a check up here on my part. Did you ever get the HE off? Without any damage I hope.

I now have this problem it looks like the drivers side forward exhaust stud or studs are corroded to the heat exchanger flange.

I have the other side removed and both rear exhaust flanges are moving on this side.

Any suggestions? Might try some ATF/acetone mix.

Not alot of room to work in there!

an air hammer to the side of each flange gets them loose.
