Help with towing-question

I removed my front shocks and sent them to Bilstein for a rebuild. I don't have a garage so I have the front of the car on old rims tucked up under the car. I have a car covered with a 911 cover so it's not an eyesore in the neighborhood.

Last evening a tow truck pulled up it he works for the home owners association. He wrote a ticket that the car is junk for not having front wheels. I told him I was waiting on my shocks and pulled up the cover showing him the car was not junk and even offered to start it.

He didn't care and said he will tow the car in a few days unless I get the wheels installed.

My friend has offered to have the car sit at his house since he has no hoa to worry about.

Does anyone know know if it can be towed without front wheels? I'm thinking flatbed won't work. Maybe the older tow trucks that have those small wheels they carry on back?

I would call a good towing company and ask them for their help. They often have dollies, etc they can use to move cars in this condition. When I was rebuilding my 911 after it's accident I did some of the work myself and then had a body shop do some of it as well.

I used a good local tow guy to take it back and forth on a flatbed from the body shop several times and various degrees of mobility (including one time with the entire front end apart. They were able to use some special dollies strapped to the front end to move it....kind of like a furniture dolly except with big rubber wheels.

it might be cheaper to find some used struts locally (ask friendly mechanics, or post an ad here), bolt them in, and away you go.

I would contact the homeowners association and explain your situation. Do they have rules preventing car maintenance? If not, tell them to go pound sand...if so, then you are probably in violation.

I would also contact Bilstein and get a firm ship date so you have that info as well. Maybe see if you can get it expedited once you explain your situation to them.

The driver will figure out a way to tow it, and may damage it in the process. Talk to the HOA and explain the situation. If that doesn't work I'd go to some local Porsche shops and get some used inserts to patch it together, the cost and hassle will be a lot less than a tow and impound fee. I've got some used inserts but it sounds like you don't have time to ship.

If you still have the front hubs on you could put the wheels back on, but still with your old rims underneath to really support the front end. The "cosmetics" would be safe and you wouldn't be violating the ($#@#) HOA nazi rules...

The ticket says they will tow on or after December 6. I'll post to a local MD/VA/DC forum if anyone has any broken struts I can jury rig just to get these hoa people off my back. I'll also call some local pcar shops if they have busted ones laying around.

Gilles I was thinking the same thing as as the hubs are still attached. I was worried the tow driver may try to move the wheels and figure out they are attached with coat hangers.

You may call Intersport Performance at (703) 242-8680. They are at Tyson Corner in McLean, VA. They have used parts and may be able to help you with a set to get your car "drivable". maybe for a deposit they will "rent" you a set.

Are piston rod bolts diameter universal across all manufacturers/brands?

I figure one bolt to attach the hub to the strut and as long as the piston bolt slides into the shock tower mount I'm good.

Tow truck driver drives up and claims to work for the HOA? Was he dispatched by HOA? Contact president of HOA and explain this occurrence, see if it's actually legit.

Cheeky to drive into a community with negative reciprocal easements and propose to steal someone's car in broad daylight with their consent, but not unheard of.

One of the members of our local club had some 964 shocks he hadn't yet tossed so he offered them to me. This is the car as of this morning with 964 shocks.

I thought National Socialism was dead but I guess not. Sounds like you need to manage your hoa and neighbors.

So the tow truck showed up because the car had a cover and hadn't moved in a few weeks?

My checklist would be;

1. Have a chat with your neighbors to Suss out any issues and
2. Come out swinging if the truck shows up again.
