I can't remember if I would have been able to leave the front wheels on the ground. When I do it I put the whole car up on stands for ease of getting at all the various bits to loosen them up. Then I lower the front till the fan will clear the rear of the car. I have one of the AC jacks so getting it up high isn't a problem. (One of the best purchases I have made for a tool.)

The real joy of the skateboard is you can steer the whole engine/trans easily by tilting it to steer and the wheels roll ultra smooth.

Pelican Parts.com - Low Profile High-Lift Floor Jack
This jack will go under a lowered car and will raise it high as you need in a single shot. The only thing that I can think of about it that isn't absolutely perfect is the release is more abrupt then I like.
(I have an old jack that I can lower excruciatingly slow. Wish I could add that to the AC.)
