Man, I'm getting burned out working about 10-12 hours a day on this stupid book. It really slows down the assembly process to a crawl when you have to take all of these pictures. I think I'm at about 600-800 over the last 3 days...

Wayne,
Don't lose heart now, the end is in sight. There are going to be loads of people who will benefit from this book. When my projects get me down (usually towards the end) I usually get myself what I call a displacement activity... Just something else totally different to work on, investigate etc etc for a couple of hours. I find this outside stimulation actually helps me to focus again. As someone else here said, "may the Porsche be with you ..." Cheers Jakes

Wayne:
The pictures you are showing are truly inspirational, even for someone who isn't planning on rebuilding their P-Car! I will buy the book just so I can get a real good idea of how my SC looks on the inside. It will also help understand what some of you guys are talking about on this BBS. The more pictures the better! Just so you know, I never bought Playboy to read the articles!! If you are showing signs of burn-out, take a break and go somewhere that has nothing to do with P-Cars. You will probably come back refreshed and ready to crank it out again. Eric 83SC

Unfortunately, I'm on a tight deadline. I'm leaving for vacation on July 10th. Gotta get it done before then.
Thanks for the pep talk guys. I'm going to head to lunch, and then tackle the cam timing photos... -Wayne

Looks Great Wayne,
Just think how great that trip to Europe will feel when it is finished. Also the personal reward of having two published works. Then not to mention the windfall from all of us Pelicanheads buying the book and the parts to do the work from you! Genius, pure genius. Wish I could have been that smart. |

Be sure to take your time and explain everything Wayne. I have 101 projects which is very good. I intend to buy a 3.2 and reuild this one--and I mean by-myself using that book.
As a mechanic, I suck beans. I will not understand what you mean by [insert some weird assed Warren vocabulary word]. Good pics go a long way!

------- "very similiar to 101 Projects Book"........IMO, the 101 book was written with a different attitude twords the machinery/mechanic than others I have read over the past 35 years..this became obvious to me with a quick fly thru...BTW, I believe I have most hard info on my subject 911...IMHO, I believe the new book is a "must have" in my library...........Ron

Quote:
I once asked the question, "what is the difference between the 2.7L crankshaft and the 3.0L crankshaft" to one of my 'experts.' He proceded to shout at me, (yes, he did) and tell me that this was the dumbest, stupidest question he had ever heard. (Of course, I did know the answer, but was asking it with respect to the 3.0L European carreras...) The bottom line is that I think that people sometimes assume that their listeners know as much as they do. Except for one instance, I have never been chided for being 'too simple' or over-simplifying things. That one instance was the review of "101 Projects" in European Car Magazine (last month or so), where the author of the review (whose name wasn't even on the review, and it was just a horrible piece of writing) poked fun at some of the more simpler projects. -Wayne

Poor poor Wayne
You may be working 10-12 hrs. a day on this book now but you will also be working 0 hrs. a day years from now while the book is still bringing in money. That's the beauty of selling copyright material. So I must say I have a hard time feeling sorry for you at this given moment.
Good Luck with the book. Bobby |

Hmmm, let's go over the economics. I get about a buck per book. Bruce's book is one of the all time best sellers for MBI, and has been consistently on the top 25 list for the past 8 years or so. So, that's about $3K a year. Not very much if you ask me.
Now, if I were Grisham, then that would be a different story. One of the reasons why I do these books is to bring more recognition (and legitimization) to Pelican. For instance, it wouldn't really be worth it to me to write a book on Mustangs... -Wayne

So what's the picture? Looks like a solid chain tensioner. Just for reassembly? I heard solid tensioners are a big no-no.

It sounds like the book publishers are as bad as the major record labels. Maybe you should re-think the cover design. Perhaps large breasted women holdings tools suggestively?
Just kidding of course. I do hope the book does well and builds upon your previous success. I'll share a previous experience that I thought of when I read your thread. I scored music for this stupid movie once that I only got paid $2500 for the whole thing. Out of that I had to pay studio and musician costs. Needless to say my take was $0. The last three days before the dub I literally got 15 min. sleep. (Do to changes they asked for but still keeping the deadline) I swore I'd never do that again. This story does have a good ending though. I owned the copyright of the music and it eventually paid off years after the fact when the movie started showing foreign. Cable royalties in the U.S. are a joke. Now how about those cam sprockets. Bobby |

That's what is known as a mechanical chain tensioner. It's used on the right side to maintain super-tight tension during the camshaft timing procedure...

Wayne,
Don't forget the pleasure you'll be bringing to people who might never would have known the joys of working on their 911 motors if you hadn't written your book. That's got to count for something even if it isn't that rewarding financially. -Chris |
