72Targa3.0 RSR flared
Hey guys, I wanted to introduce you to this interesting car that made its way to me.
I dont quite know what stroke of luck led me to it, but something led me to find the car of my dreams. This is pretty much the ultimate assemblage of what I put together after countless hours of boyhood daydreaming. Im a fan of longhoods, hotrods, and targas - and this one has all three. 1972- Check Targa - Check Longhood bumpers - phew Hot Rod Engine - Check Rear Flares - Definitely! Fresh paint - thank god, the only thing I really dont want to learn to do Boosted Brakes - Why not? ![]() The history of the car is pretty ideal as well. The PO bought the car back in the early 90s, when the car was only 20 years old, and worked and upgraded the car (one of his many) for his wife to bomb around in out in the dry heat of central california. There were obviously countless hours and labors of love put into this car, and I am only just starting to uncover all that was done, a lot more than I would ever be able to do, so I am grateful. In 1999 the car was parked in the garage, and hadn't been touched, save proper storage etiquette like draining the gas, etc, until I got it last month. This is how it sat for the past 13 years. ![]() After we settled on a price that was way under what he had into it, and way over what I told myself I was allowed to spend, I drove her back the 100 miles or so to San Francisco. This car hasnt been driven since the end of the '90s, but still chugged along like it was just a short nap! Well, besides the fact the front oil cooler leaks, and the starter only works when it wants to, it was a great first trip. Once back home, I found the oil cooler would have to be recored, so that was the first thing I started on. Luckily it was pretty new and came out fairly easily. ![]() Next Ill have to start playing with the engine to see what kind of condition it really is in. It sounds amazing, and pulls great, but spits out way more white smoke than I would like. Im hoping its a decade of deposits that need some time to clear out, but Im wondering how long that would take? What would you guys do when freshening up a dormant 911? Im really itching to get to drive this thing, but I know, patience..... it will come....

Beautiful car sir. I cannot answer with any certainty how to go about freshening up this car after sitting for that period, but I'd start with all filters, plugs, wires, fresh oil and gas! Then hit the road!
Does the 3.0L have the dry-sump style oil lubrication system with external tank and cooler? If so.... you might crack those oil lines, and check for coked oil and such. she's georgeous, enjoy your new car!

Congrats with the car, although with as many posts as you have, you're no stranger to Pelican or Porsches, right? What's the story on prior rides?
Happy for you that you've found the car of your dreams - I know the budget has to be tight for now, but after all the mechanicals are sorted (don't forget brakes!), are there any plans for aesthetics like changing the wheels and/or duck? I think, humbly speaking, that this car would totally improve with some rsr finished 17' fuch replicas and duck! |

Very nice find.....If it's running as well as you say, I'd change oil/filer and keep driving it.....The smoke will probably go away......When sitting, the engine tends to seep oil out the exhaust into the muffler.......Takes a while to burn out.......
I'd also consider changing the flexible brakes lines. They swell with age and won't let the pistons retract back into the caliper...A clue would be a dragging brake and/or rotor warm to the touch.....G'luck

I would take a peek behind the fan and be sure mice haven't built nests on top of the cylinders, it's a favorite place for them and you can end up cooking a cylinder. Agree with brake lines, brake fluid flush, Oil/Filter change, fuel filter..

Take side rockers off, get rid of the chrome rear bumperettes, put 15" Fuchs
with RSR finish and voila..you got a nice car. The word nice can change depending on how much $$ you start "investing" into the car. A word to the wise...do not look back how much $$ you've spent during ownership. 'if you do it, do it right...or don't do it at all'. ![]() |
