I've been thinking long and hard about this and I just can't give up the 911. So, what do you all think of the 90-92 C2 Cabriolet? Remember, I want a car that is topless and that my wife can get in and drive without me lecturing her about proper shifting techniques. I've never driven one, but it seems the general consenses is that the car is easier to drive and live with, somewhat less of a "drivers" car, but still rear engined, air cooled, and fast. Besides your opinion on the car, what might I look for in the way of updates/repairs and what are the "right" options to have on the car as far as wheels, interior, exterior, performance? I haven't told my wife yet about this, but I feel I could own a C2 without fussing too much over it- I doubt she'll believe me but the proof is in my actions, Right?

R22,
You'll love it. Go for the latest 964 you can swing. The car has great "classic" looks, 993 refinement, goes like stink and is as reliable as a hammer. Enjoy. ------------------ Mike 94 C2 cab |

If you can get away with using your wife as an excuse for an upgrade, I say GO FOR IT!! May have to try it myself.

I heartily aprove, R22. The 911 is why you got into Porsches in the first place, I'm glad you're staying with the breed.
I also think the 90-92 C2 should make a great car and they seem to be good values right now. I have thought about the same thing, for some of the same reasons, in the back of my mind. Let us know how you make out. I might be able to follow your lead someday. ------------------ MRM 1984 Carrera Cab Eurospec |

My parents made the same move as you did. Just over a year ago, my mom finally had it with the manual top '84 cab and the old man got her a '90 C2 (I BTW purchased the '84 from them!). I have driven both. Yes, the C2 is definitely more civilized. My gf hates the '84 (for all the reasons I love it), and loves the C2. The C2 is more modern inside, feels like a new car (power steering, hydraulic clutch, etc), and is definitely easier to live with. I remember the earlier C2's had some issues (clutch I think)...I think they said to stay away from the earlier ones but I can't remember what the problems were or what years. Look into it first, but I am sure you will be very happy you got it.

humm, what to look for?, First always buy the best example.
clutch upgrade from dual mass to LUK Distributor belt and vent kit(get the belt replaced right away -avoid the headache later) Recalls on 964 1 fuel filler hose and clamp 2 little heater switch thing on blower tube in engine compartment After '91 the cylinder thing is moot (rare anyway. Check up under the pass. side heatexchanger for dripping fliud most likely from cam shaft seal on power steering drive @$700 fix And remove that under pan for good! |

excellent choice! i'm sure you will enjoy the C2 cabriolet! i would certainly love to have one of those just about as much as a 968. you're getting a car that will be a performance, ergonomics, power, and handling improvement over your current car. you'll also be familiar with the 911 handling traits in general, so it won't be the same "learning curve" as it would with the 968. might as well stick with what you're familiar with. on the same token, i plan to get a 944 turbo next when the 924 race car is done in 2004.
![]() offhand, was Dan helpful about the 968 stuff? good luck! obin |

R22- I really like those as well, but can't you get a very clean 87-89 for the same $$? It would be an improvement as they have the G50. Loads of folks (me included) say these were the best years produced.
Or, if you want the perfect wife vehicle get a mid to late 90s 911 w/ tiptronic. A automatic 911 will be super easy for her to drive! ------------------ 87 Carrera Cabriolet |

I have a '90C4 Cab that leaks water in both the driver and passenger foot wells. There are large foam sound insulation pieces in the footwell that are perfect for soaking up and retaining a ton of water. Excpect electrical operation to suffer due to the water trapped in the footwell carpets as electrical wires run throughout the foot well areas.
Ck for an oil leak at the rear main seal area $$$ Make sure clutch is sound $$$ Make sure no prior axs $$$ Valve gaskets cover leaks are not that big a deal, nor is chain cover gaskets but as noted earlier by another poster that rear right side cam seal where the power sterring rubber drive lives could leak too $$$ 964 drives firmer than a 993, in my opinion. Good luck |

Well, I live in Virginia, and we just had torrential downpours over the weekend that left about 1" of water in my basement. Fifty bucks says my home repair will cost WAY more than any 964 repair!
I think it's time I straighten out and simplify my life...fix the house and sell it and just LIVE in the 964. There's a problem here though...I'd be happy ALL the time. Can you be too happy?? |

right on. not much of a choice when you compare a glorified 924 throwaway car to a nice 964. the value will stay up too.

yeah, orin i'm an *******. but what are you? this is the 911 board don't forget. i've noticed in your posts that you do seem ready to jump on anyone for any reason. i said what i said and i'm sticking to it. we're all entitled to our own opinions. it's hard to pussyfoot around and never offend anyone in this life. get a grip.

Well, John, in your defense (not that you need my help) I have two things to say. First of all you did not attack a person or a group of people (unlike you, Obin). You expressed an opinion about a model of car. What's wrong with having a strong opinion? Those people who own a 924, 944 or 968 and are secure in themselves and their ownership will brush that comment off. Remember, John's opinion was about the car and not the owner.
Obin, nearly every time I pick up a newspaper I read an opinion from someone who hates SUV's. I happen to own one. You'll hear the auto enthusiast magazines refer to many of the cars out there as "transportation appliances." I happen to own one of those, too. Do I take it personally? No. Those people are entitled to their opinions and couldn't possibly understand my unique circumstances. But you see, I don't primarily identify myself as an SUV, Honda or, dare I say it, a Porsche owner. Second, and I doubt that this even needs to be said, the technical information and hints that you (John) offer us are priceless. But I also enjoy seeing a bit of the person behind that information come out to play once in awhile ![]() ------------------ Rod Walter '88 911 coupe [This message has been edited by Rod Walter (edited 08-15-2001).] [This message has been edited by Rod Walter (edited 08-15-2001).] |

Hello
Besides your opinion on the car, what might I look for in the way of updates/repairs and what are the "right" options to have on the car as far as wheels, interior, exterior, performance? Just buy the car she likes most. Don´t even think about upgrading or "restoring". Buy a driver and never invest more then to keep it on the road or beat it around the track. If not we have "same player shoots again" or "tilt ! game over". BTW let her "testdrive" some other cars too. Grüsse |
