Rally lights and proper positioning suggestions
So I finally get out onto an open twisty road.....I am running H4s, a pair of hood mounted 6 inch H3s and a smaller set of early style 4 inch H3 driving lamps mounted above the bumper where the typical factory fog/driving lamp is.
The H4s have a fluted lens and throw and asymmetrical low beam and are dual 80/100w. The H3s are all single 100w bulbs and have clear non directional lenses. All are separately circuited and switched but can be activated with one throw of a master switch. The 911 is euro delivery and has upgraded relays and the H3s have added relays.... I had a set of reproduction Cibie Bolle on the hood but was a bit underwhelmed. The fluted glass threw a fuzzy beam. The smaller bumper mounted Hella had a crisper look even with the same manufacturer bulb and wattage. Sold the repros and searched for an alternative. As some of you may have read, I picked up a set of Hella Optilux Rally lights. They needed some mods but look period and went on easy. NOW my question.....running with high beams, the 4 inchers are set a bit outboard and light up areas that were dark before and help on corners when moving at a spirited pace....kinda like Marty Feldman's eyes.... The main H4s are doing their assigned job as the main light source. Can't really mess with them as that would be a major cop attraction even on low beam.... The Hella's 6 inch H3s are set up at the same height as the H4 high beams. They fill in spots the H4s fail to cover and brighten up the main beam but I am thinking that I should adjust the H3s beam so that they project further up the road. Not like there is a manual on this but what do I gain or lose by aiming the H3s farther up the road as opposed to level with the main lights? Anyone with rally experience with a BTDT opinion? ![]()

I went here; Daniel Stern Lighting Consultancy and Supply
for a starting point. Only real way to adjust after that is real world driving! Might want to try it out on an old rally route and adjust to fit your style. |

Well, the beam IS flat......I guess that is optimal. The height of the center of the beam at the hood and twenty feet ahead as displayed on a flat wall are the same.
Makes sense. Thanks.
