what's the best source for a 73 windshield

mine leaks, so while it's out I want to put in a new one, and new rubber bits, headliner etc.

Are windshields usually available locally?

Call all the auto glass places in your yellow pages. I did and found a 993 windshield in great condition for $50. Everywhere else the standard one for my 78SC was going between $250 and $450. You get lucky once in a while.

what years can I use for a 73 - and do the seals vary? I understand I need a U.S. version seal for the car, but will that seal work with 993 glass?

Usually, you have a choice between a German OEM windshield and a domestic replacement. My advice is to get the aftermarket one. I've been told the German one is softer (i.e. more prone to chip and sand damage), and the aftermarket one, even with the tint stripe, sells for about $165.

In my experience at least, the windshield is a consumable. It gets slowly sandblasted away from highway and track use. I don't think it makes sense to pay a premium price ($400?) for something that I'm going to want to replace every three or four years. If I was a concours guy, I'm sure I'd see it differently.

Safelite is a national chain, I think. You might also want to check with Tweeks in Illinois or Doc 'n Cy's in Indianapolis (800-950-0356).

Get an OEM seal, though, no matter what. Pelican has that, and the trim.

During the Open Track Challenge, I got one from Parts Heaven, in Hayward California, for $165, and they agreed to hide it in the bushes of their shop so that I could pick it up that night. I'm not sure what shipping is like for a windshield, but they're one option.

Safelite sold me one for that price, too. But their prices vary based on location.

Send me an email at jackolsen@attbi.com, and I'll send you some more specific ideas.

Cool

Gentleman...I got blasted by a wild woman in a semi with a golf ball size rock, I ducked...she was hopping around in rush hour traffic and squezzzes in front of me in the left lane...She would be great with a 12 ton La France with lights and sirens..Anyway, I want to wait till I return home for new spectacles..my current idea is a '88 911 tinted that I've seen on a A/C model, if that makes a difference..it has a med. band on top and radio antenna....... now the original A/C windscreen is clear compared to the "88..matching the other glass is another story..A Pelicanhead who BTDT says get US,, no problem w/that...My little brain says post your bright idea for the '88 model ...my last bright idea w/headlights left me blind at 60 mph..Therefore, is this current bright idea my best shot??...I don't care about originality..my 911 is personalized to fit one driver.........Ron

Paul,

You mean that a windshield place had a good used one? Didn't know they dealt in those. I would be interested in used as long as it is MINT. I want to replace WS on my '82 when I repaint, my car has glass w/ heating element in it, $1200 OEM, $3-400 aftermarket. Thinking about losing heating element, just want new glass.
