paint color and value
Looking for your opinion on my project - I'm restoring a nice, solid, 67 912. It was originally Irish Green, it is currently black and I am having a hard time deciding if I want to stay true to the car and take it back to original Irish or if I can get away with painting it conda green which I like much better. What is your opinion on how original color vs a "better" color affects value?

Original is always better from a resale standpoint - unless the original color is a really unfavorable one ("better color" is subjective). There's also the problem of getting ALL the original color covered/replaced so you don't get a chip with another color showing beneath it or have a different color in the engine compartment.
I think Irish Green is pretty common among 912s so it's relatively safe.

If you are going for originality then your choice is easy. If you are not going for originality in the project then paint it the color that will provide YOU with a grin everytime you open the garage door to sneak-a-peak. Afterall it's your project.
All the best with it and keep us posted of the progress with photos. Mike Last edited by brock911; 12-16-2012 at 04:47 AM.. |

My 70 Targa was conda green. When I first got it the color was just OK. After a few years the plan to repaint it back to Irish green got stronger. I just thought the more modern color never looked right on the older car.
When I am finished I will post a picture.

I once had a fly yellow 84 Carrera. I owned it for 8 years, loved it, and got several offers to buy the car while I was driving it around. Fast forward to when I actually wanted to sell the car, I could not give it away. Yellow is attractive to only 1% of buyers, and not all of them want a Carrera and are ready to buy right away. It went for cheap.
So, if you love green, paint it what ever shade of green you like, that brings value to you and only you. When it comes to sell, you will find that you have to wait a long time for that 1% to show up, or let it go cheap. THat is the value of the color to somebody else. There is a reason why they call it resale red. That always sells. I am now looking for a 964 red/tan (but not a C4).

Irish Green is a very beautiful and classic Porsche color. I've had a few in that color.

My opinion (and that is all it is) is that you will lose 10-20% of the potential value painting it the non original green.
I also believe you will lose value if you paint it in BC/CC rather than single stage with hardener. I am not sure what paint was used in the 1960's but I would find out and paint it with the same brand and closest blend made.

+1 on green only because that is going to look amazing. I think you should count yourself lucky!

I have a '66 912 that I bought back in July. It was originally a beige color, not nice in my eyes that has been painted silver over the years. I love the silver and would not return it to the original flesh color regardless of resale value.
Paint it whatever color you really want. It's your car!!!

After much consideration its going back to original Irish Green, I just feel like returning it to the way it was produced regardless of value or personal color preference - took me a couple weeks to decide
