Fan scraping, alt shaft on an angle?
What do you guys make of this? Look at the angle the pulley seems to be sitting on near the end:

It started scraping in the fall, so I removed everything and saw that the outer pulley half had been chewed up due to improper mounting, and that the shaft it sits on was also chewed up. I bought a new pulley and had the shaft repaired so it all sat perfectly. I reassembled and got this. I can't fathom how that could possibly be sitting on an angle!
And to be sure, yes, I checked tension, and it's fine - not too tight, not too loose.

Something is crooked then.
I was going to offer up that the belt is too tight. If it's not the belt, then the alternator is sitting in the housing wrong.

Make sure the alternator is sitting all the way into the fan housing.

The housings sometimes crack too. Mine was rubbing and required a replacement housing.

Just ordered a replacement housing and fan (plus new strap/hardware) for my 89. I'd make double sure that alt/fan is seated where it lives....
BEST! Doyle

So the consensus seems to be it's an alignment issue with the installation of the fan itself, rather than something much more serious? That's good news!

I think it's an alignment issue with the alternator, which is causing an alignment issue with your fan. Unless you have some really wonky shims, the fan should not be difficult at all to get straight. Your alternator could possibly be crooked in the housing.

The same thing happen too my SC a couple years ago, the arms of the housing that mount to alternator had small cracks that allowed things to shift. Replaced housing all good
