Front Fog Light Bulbs-Replacement
The bulbs I just pulled out are OSRAM-64153 100W.
100W seems a bit much for the front fogs. What are you guys using? Thanks in advance. Gerry

Hi "86 T" I got on mine 55's Silver stars and they work really good and I get a decent amount of light from them. Yeah I think that 100w is a bit much, have you seen any relays for the fogs somewhere within the fuse box area? Anyway 55's should be okay.

Fog Lamps.

My concern is the potential heat damage to the lenses.

Apparently the plastic housing on the Carrera lights is susceptible to heat damage and warping. I replaced the bulbs on mine with 35 watt units. They are rarely used for anything other than being visible to other drivers on the highway. The lights are mostly useless anyway, and adding high wattage bulbs isn't going to change that.

That's because most states REQUIRE that the main beams be in USE during night time hours, making the use of fog lights not only useless but also detrimental to a person's night distance vision. The fog lights in my '88 Carrera have fairly high power, 5W, amber LED bulbs. "...being visible to other drivers...." High Beam DRLs would be best for that since fog light beam pattern is LOW and WIDE. Last edited by wwest; 12-30-2012 at 06:00 PM.. |

Dr Gerry, 100W is way too much. Shoot even 55W, I went with 35W motorcycle H3's so it will not melt the plastic Bosch housing. Here you go , can't beat this price:
I am going to the 35W Yellow HID kit now.

Any LED that will fit? I know there are all sorts of things developing on the LED front, certainly they are not intense enough for headlights yet, but might make an ideal fog.

SuperBriteLEDs . com has them but they are a bit longer and the shield needs to bent out to fit correctly. LEDS here are worthless, they do not throw enough light where it is needed. it is just for bling

During daytime hours, pretty much any front facing fog light is more or less useless for the driver being able to see ahead. It's good (as are any front lights) for others to see you, though. I use mine for highway driving as DRLs. Compared to high beams, they are almost as beneficial when it comes down to someone seeing you coming down the highway and to have them not pass another car in your lane. Mine are wired to be able to run independently of the headlights, but will still turn off with the ignition switch. The only fog lights on my car that I find even remotely useful are the ones on the rear. In thick fog, it's nice to know that I'm not relying on just the tiny, dim, regular tail lights to stop me from getting rear-ended. Having a couple 20 watt red fogs back there sure adds some piece of mind.
