911T with S package

Good morning all,

I was in Brumos Porsche over the holiday (my parents live near Jacksonville and my dad has been pondering a new Boxster), and got to talking about my '73 911T with the salesman there who seemed to be very knowledgeable regarding the older 911's and after talking to him some it seems my car has the "S Package".

It is a 73.5T, but it has the extra gages (gas/oil level and oil temp and pressure). he also indicated that the trim on the side of the car was the "S" trim. While I can imagine the gauges having been changed it would seem odd to change the trim.

He believed the other factors on the car that were different with the S package were swaybars (911T did not have them as standard) and "S" brakes (aluminum calipers). Can anyone confirm this? Were there any other differentiating factors? (he mentioned nicer carpet but my carpet has all been removed and scrapped).

Is there a way to tell via the serial number (VIN) if that is correct for the car, or if bits and pieces were retrofitted?

The S package was called something else along the lines of the "appearance" package. Swaybars and S calipers were separate options.

Go to the Early 911T Website. There you will find an "option list"

I'm guessing you mean 911S registry? The 911T website is pretty much useless as far as I can tell.. many links were dead.

Nevermind, I found the 1970 T options list on 911T... missed that link first time and it does still work.

I agree, the 911T site isn't as "vibrant", but if you click on the "option" link you will be able to view the list of options. My 73.5 T had an array of options. Per the COA it seemed as though the original owner itemized the options rather than had packages. Your car sounds similar.
Mine had sport seats, extended hub steering wheel, chrome rockers, front and rear sway bars, S gauges, S brakes, sunroof, forged wheels and tinted glass.

I think it had Fuchs wheels originally... that is what the spare wheel is. Wheels on the car are non-standard.

According to the options list (for 1970 not 73) the appearance package had the badges in gold which my car does not have.
Also, my stock seats were vinyl but the headrests were (matching) leather. options list shows that leather headrests were an option only with leather seats.. Odd? At least i'm about 90% sure they are leather, will double check.

is there any way to get a list of factory options from the VIN/Serial #?

Will have to put that CoA on my wish list for now... Brakes and swaybars should be easy to tell.

On my 73 can calipers be upgraded without changing the knuckles? I've heard conflicting stories on whether it is a bolt on, or whether other changes are needed.

I did the CoA about 3 months ago on my 70 T and it was a waste of money. They did not even have the serial number for the 901 transmission or the options. Mine has sport seats, steering wheel and the deep 6s on it. They may have been added later but who knows? Actually the deep 6s were, 2 with hearts, 2 without Steve

Check to see if your car was a Sportomatic at one time - a lot of S options came on the Sporto, certainly the gauges and S brakes. The PO could have also specified the 'appearance package' at purchase. This would give nearly a full S mechanical package (sans engine ).

Mackguy, if you just call Porsche NA on thier 1-800 number and give them your VIN they will look up what options came with your car initially. It will not cost anything. It will take a day or so for them to get back to you but they will. If you want to know the original engine number they will look that up as well. I know because I did it for mine about 2 months ago. They were extremely helpful. As I said, didn't cost anything. You don't get any paper work, just a phone call. If you want the written CoA that will cost you.

Was your car originally delivered to Italy or was it always a US car?

My '74S came with factory Bilstein struts. Not sure if they were part of the S package.
Engine shroud sticker says T/S which implies to me they are essentially one and the same. Shroud is Green on mine.

How would I know if it was once a sportomatic or delivered to Italy? I have zero history on the car before my purchase (it was a running, driving 911 Targa for <$10,000...)

BTW, anyone know what wheels those are? They say "Made in Australia" and have a false knock-off hub with Porsche logo.

I'm thinking ( if you're car is like mine ) you have the "S" PKG but not the cool "S" aluminum calipers. My understanding is that you can't just bolt on "S" calipers to a stock "T" car. You'd need to also change out the entire strut as well.

Could be wrong.

The reason that I ask about Italy is that a recent article mentioned that to get around luxury taxes, back in the day Italian dealers would order a T for their customers and then install the S options, rather than order an S.

My friend in Canada has such a 72T car from Italy. It had S wheels, sway bar etc. All the goodies.

Going back in time..my 73.5T had the gas/oil level and oil temp and pressure guages..I think they all did. If it was an option..I think everyone had it.

The side trim in this picture was stock. I think the "S" trim may have been wider. My car had sway-bars stock too. I don't recall seeing any 73 911s without sway-bars.

I added the "S" chin spoiler..as may others did too. The factory part was metal (I think) the aftermarket part was fiberglass.

Adding "S" calipers was a popular modification. I never did that. Yes, the car could of ordered with "S" brakes.

I had the steel wheels and went to Fuch wheels later..a popular modification too.

I think those were options too..not exclusive to a "S". They may have been aftermarket. Its been a long time. I don't recall if they were factory bits.
