Question flood damage

Thinking about buying a flood damage car from new jersey area. What are your thoughts ? It's a 84 911 . Are any parts worth saving ,motor ,panels ? price is around $6000. Thanks

Probably salt water damage. Free might be a good deal but $6K?

Lots of questions here. Where from in NJ? Salt or fresh water? How far up was it submerged ? Tread very carefully, especially @ 6K.

I can't imagine that worst case you couldn't part it for more then 6K but if that isn't your intention the cheapest way to make it a good long term reliable car is to buy a long term reliable car and use this one for spares.

Flood Damage? New Jersey? Like in Sandy? I heard of entire garage parking levels underwater. Would not touch that with a ten foot pole.

Lived through it. My son's BMW was up to the trunk with water in Hoboken, electronics started to corrode immediately. Salt & sewage water, not worth it.

1975Porsche: You have received great advice from the above. Here is one more piece: You Cannot Import It Into Canada!!!
Check with riv.ca.com---No flood damaged vehicles can be imported to Canada-unless you want to part it out-no chance of registering it--it is "Branded".

I heard that many of the fires started by cars in the garage shorting out when they got their electronics submerged by saltwater. Any truth to this?

If you part it out ?

Another thing to consider is if you try to part it out and do not disclose the water damage...You will find yourself up the proverbial creek.

The DME is under the seat, likely fried. Avoid.

If the paint and interior are in good shape, low mileage (less 150K miles), and it is a coupe I'll buy it. So it all depends on the condition and your plan about the it. If you could fix it and rebuild the motor your self that would be an advantage. If you have no experience in engine/car rebuilding, I would think twice. Keep us posted.

A Canadian cannot import a vehicle into Canada that has been flood damaged.
Check out riv.ca.com

I'm also looking for cheap damaged cars and I came up with flooded cars at Crashescars and now I'm in two minds to buy one or not, I think it all depends on the submersion, if the water level wasn't deep enough to cause problems with the electronics and engine, than probably it might be fine.

There are a ton of flood damaged cars going though insurance auctions right now from Sandy.

Sadly, even a Porsche is likely only scrap value - the engine and transaxle could be filled with salt water and have damaged the internals, the electrics are probably shot, interior most likeyly beyond repair, etc.

Basically the only thing useable would be some of the hard parts - body work, suspension arms, wheels, glass, etc
If water got into the block and transaxle case, the freezing temps over the pst couple of weeks could have cracked the cases as well.

I've already started to see 'cheap' 911's for sale recently without the 'flood damage' notice....watch out.
If a car has been seriously flooded by seawater it is basically toast, you need to do a complete vehicle strip and replace all electrics and other items. On a unibody you'll never get all of the sand, salt out.
