Moving the shifter back?

I have been thinking about moving the entire shifter towards the driver. I have looked at the tunnel and I should be able to move it about 30mm (slightly more than an inch) without much problem, just drilling a few new holes and shorten the linkage rod 30mm.
30mm doesn't sound like much but I think the difference would be big.
A little more modifications and 2 inches shouldn't be a problem.

Oh, yes. The handbrake would need to be shortened also (feasible), since moving that would be more difficult.
I don't have the useless center console otherwise there would be more work.

Any thoughts about this?

Do it and let me know!
I must have T-rex arms but the reach forward kind of annoys me even with a "tall" Wevo shifter.

Have you considered a Hargett shifter? They work fantastic. Lots of info posted on them here on Pelican.

Handbrake not shown in this example, but will still work by adding a handle extension.

Also a word of caution...........be careful when drilling into the tunnel, as the fuel lines are there and are subject to damage. Its a huge job replacing them.

I bet they do, but $595 vs $0....

I like the way it raises the shifter from an ergonimic point of view, but I like the long floor mounted shifter of a proper Porsche.

Furthermore, I want better access to the handbrake. That is the next order of business. I would like to be able to engage the handbrake easily for quick 180 degree turns when I auto-x.

Do a search, there is a person that has done this, has pics of the install, etc..
It looks like a lot of work, but if you have the skills and time..

I modified my shift lever. very easy with a torch, vise, and a piece of pipe. a big bend toward the driver then back to vertical. falls easily to hand now and doesn't bang the passenger's leg. might be an easier approach.

Yes, I remember that thread for a few reasons

Moving, bending, extending.... There are a few options, I'll have to mount my seat first to see what will best suit me.

I have a short shift kit and then bought a 3" extension last year using a MOMO knob and now the shifter falls almost straight down from the 380mm OMP wheel and there is no shoulder movement going into 1-3 or 5. I think the extension came from Sherwood on this site. Combined with ivangene's coupler and new shifter bearings, my shifting of the recalcitrant 915 is now almost like a real car :=) and it involved no cutting or moving AND it looks stock.

This was done on at least one of the 911Rs and if I recall correctly had a shorter, straighter lever arm.

I moved mine back about 7 inches along with the handbrake. The shift feel is better in that it no longer feels like stirring mud with a long stick, but it was a lot of work.

regards,
Phil

I did it, see this thread towards the end.

Raising / relocating 911 shifter

Works great no issues for me.

OK one small thing.

The shifter housing was raised by the thickness of the spacer but the receiver on the end of the shift rod remained at the original height.

Therefore the nylon bearing on the end of the shift lever was not fully engaged in the receiver.

Not having a lathe to turn the correct ID, I purchased a used receiver, cut off 1/4" and welded.

Increasing the lever length accomplishes the same. 3" extensions:
