Back Wall Lining, lost cause?

This is out of an 84 Targa. Lost cause or can it be restored back to hold original 4x6 speakers? Anybody ever restore one of these before?

Patch holes or replace top board?

Also, Not easy to see but there are 3 screws in the x and y axis of the original ellipse. Probably used to be four before the PO cut out the larger holes. They aren't where the original cover screws would be in the corners of the ellipse. They are also covered by the leather on the top. Almost like there was a spacer/baffle attached to the bottom of the lining. Any pictures of the underneath of a correct lining would be appreciated.

Have a look at the used parts forum.

I agree on buying a better one in good shape - probably pretty inexpensive. However, I did replace the fiberboard you are showing using the old piece as a template and that is not a hard project. The fiberboard is basically something you are going to find at your better hardware store.

Now you can set oval speaker cutouts; whatever. The pieces separate of course. Keep the old fiberboard piece for hole reference measurements and consider mounting a pair of the metal strap holders you see in the footwell right on top of the finished deck, at the "double" screw supports left and right you'll find on the back deck.

Are you thinking as spacers or extra attachment points?

So best bet might be to get another one. Separate both and reattach the new one to my leather.

Was your back deck flat or did it have a slight bow to it? Trying to figure if mine is also warped.

I'm curious about this as well. I just took my blue leather rear shelf out and it was badly curved. Were they flat from the factory originally?

Take a look at mine: Rear parcel shelf help.

Look forward to hearing some feedback on this...

Hi,

Are you referring to the metal bracket behind the lining that holds the original speaker and cover?

Sorry - I am not being clear. For a Targa, when you pull the rear deck, you will see two small upside down U shaped brackets, each with two screw holes in them. ID their location, put holes in new deck, put deck on, screw the strap metal bracket into these two holes, one per side.

Thanks for sharing this picture. Those screws now make sense. Finding used brackets would have to be almost impossible due to the way they would have been tore out during speaker upgrades. Any other close up pictures of these would be helpful. What thickness do you think the bracket is? Steel or aluminum?

No problem. The part is called a speaker frame P/N 944 555 159 00. Our host lists them at $17.00 each. Being a 944 part there might be a few more around and you might be able to get them from a dismantler.

My recollection is that they are steel, I have one around somewhere so if no one posts anything further I will find it so I can measure it for you.

I'll just correct this slightly. The speaker frame part number listed above is a spacer, the metal part is called a support and is 911 555 215 00.

Bought

JMOD,

Thanks for the part number. Just ordered a pair with some speed nuts.

Since the only recomendations that I got were to buy a new one in better shape,
I will be redoing the one that I have. The thought process being if I need to buy a new one then what does it hurt if I fudge this one up. I will be posting pictures of my progress.

One of my freinds recomended Duraglass. Sounds like you have to be pretty talented when you use it in bodywork when you have a finish paint job over it but my project will be covered under a layer of foam and leather.

Looking at the pictures of the other deck it looks like his curve that tucks under the back window is worst than mine. Does anyone have a good picture of what this should look like so we can reshape ours. I'm figuring with a little bit of heat and pressure I should be able to get it back into shape. I just need to know the shape.

I'll have installation questions later. Seems like you need to know a few tricks to reinstall these things. My deck wasn't installed when I got it so I don't have that benefit of dismantling to understand reinstallation. The way my catch at the bottom of the deck is bent, the people that took it out didn't understand how to dismantle it either. A close up picture of this metal catch would be nice just to get an idea of the dimension it needs to be to fit snug.

Grouper,

I am following your project as I plan to replace the rear deck on my 86 Targa later this winter. I will probably buy a new deck in black vinyl from our host. Anyway, you were looking for a picture of the catch at the bottom of the deck. Do the pictures in the following threads help you?

Ever wonder what it looks like under the rear deck?

Good luck!

Grouper,

Unfortunately I don't seem to have any photos of that bracket. I also have a baby seat installed which is a real pain to remove so there is no practical way for me to get a picture. Looks like sojaseh that posted earlier has the opportunity to take a close up picture, maybe he might oblige?

It looks like you rear deck has a slight bow up after the thick pad also. I'm not looking forward to putting the PITA back in.
