87 911 has 911 turbo clutch?

Is that true?

The g-50 rubber centered clutch can be replaced with the spring centered 240mm clutch plate from a 76'-77' turbo. I did this when I replaced mine.
Other than the fact that the car has a new clutch there is no reason to pay more $$$ if this has been done.

May be a dumb question but when "converting" a G50 to the "turbo" clutch what exatly is replaced? My ''88 was converted to the turbo clutch by the PO but I'm not clear on what exactly gets changed...is it just throwing away the rubber centered disc and replacing it with the 240mm "turbo" version or are the flywheel and pressure plate different in the turbo application?

TIA

It's not a turbo clutch. It's only a turbo-like disc. The G50 and 930 clutch housings & flywheels themselves are different. So what you're seeing in your '87 clutch is a 75-77 930 (3.0L non-intercooled) spring centered disc. The later 930 disc does not fit. I don't know why. I just know that the 75-77 disc is the one that works.

But in all honesty the incentive to install the 930 disc started years ago when there weren't alternatives to the pesky rubber centered disc that is original to the G50 clutch. Somebody discovered that the 75-77 930 disc was a straight drop-in fit. Nowadays there are all sorts of companies that make spring discs for the G50 clutch. Actually the rubber centered discs have been phased out so I don't know that it's even possible to get one anymore? So the expensive 930 disc is not really a must-have when there's other suitable alternatives.

Thanks Kevin...so I just look for spring centered clutch discs for 87-89 cars? My clutch is fine now but I'm thinking I may replace it later when I get some time to drop the engine to address some oil leaks.
EDIT, answered my own question, found one on Pelican but pushing $400! I think I'll try to go easy on the one I've got now...

You can find non-OEM discs that are of good quality for less than $400. Unfortunately the exchange rate right now for Made in Germany goodness is not in our favor!

Clutchnet has a wide variety of clutch discs to choose from and the winter months typically have a strong discount with free shipping.
