just the difference of X 0.707 for RMS and X .636 for average...(somewhere there-abouts),....
Agreed: it's not a lot...still, it's processing RMS.

Best to you wwest!

Why does everything work so damned well when running with the new battery vs the tired battery with the alternator cranking out 14-ish volts?

Does the car draw from the battery only and not the alternator?
as batteries age, the internal resistance goes up. this reduces the available amps.
the 2 together could explain it, along with perhaps the condition of you charging system and wiring. (grounds too).
i would go through the fuse box, remove each wire one at a time and clean the ends and clean the screw that clamps it down. also clean the fuse ends and the clips that hold them in. all the resistance along with an old battery.

i have a VERY large UPS that powers my radar site. 40 batteries at 480V. every quarter i have to go in and check internal resistance of all the batteries, along with some other checks. but it is just one way to determine if a battery is going bad.

What about the effects of those multi earth cable and terminal kits the "ricers" seem so keen on?

All sorts of claims have been made about theses kits... Like more HP and better fuel economy.
Personally I'm a bit sceptical. If your terminals and cabling are OK then all should be good.

i have not seen that. i only see it benefitting the seller of the part.

it looks like the idea has come from amp builders. they do something called "star grounding". kinda looks like the same principle.

make sure the hi current circuits have large cables and very good connections, like the starter circuit and charging circuit.

Actually it is not that simple since you have a root of the sum of squares.

For example if you add a sine wave that measures 1 volt rms on your meter to a 12 volt dc source the resulting rms is 12.041 volts.

Yep - I "think" my connections are good but I will spend a couple of hours cleaning them within the next week.

Even if they are fine, a little PM is not a bad thing. I did replace all fuses last year but I did not perform some of the cleaning tricks that I have read about. I used the pencil eraser in a drill but I think there are some chemicals that aid cleaning/connectivity/anti corrosion that I did not use.

I don't want to pull the alternator but I may get my shroud strap dipped this week so it won't be that bad. I may get me some of those washers with teeth that bite into each side of the connection to go the extra mile.

Thanks again to all for the time to write out many detailed explanations that this layman can make some sense of.

The "saw-toothed wave form" discussions were over my head but it's all good.
