where in the sf bay area can i get a goetze oil ring for a 3.0 asap?

Over the course of my motor reassembly, Thursday is my evening to break and lose things. With the weekend approaching, inevitably something I really need snaps or disappears into another dimension, so my Saturday and Sunday is wasted waiting for the postman to deliver a replacement, which arrives Monday or Tuesday.

Tonight it was the oil ring. Last night I had assembled the pistons, rings and cylinders and was looking forward to spending a Saturday afternoon checking deck height and attaching the jugs. But all day today I was nagged by the feeling that on the first two pistons I assembled I may not have put the oil rings on correctly. I didn't recall being able to find the word TOP. So tonight I pulled out the first couple pistons. Alas, everything was as it should be. But as I re-installed the oil ring on the second piston, it snapped.

Anyway, woeful tales aside, does anyone know where in the San Francisco/north bay area I can find an oil ring Friday? I wonder if any of the two Porsche shops that work on air cooled 911s here might have one in stock...

If I remember, the cylinder on a 3.0 and a 3.2 engine are the same size. If so, I have four sets of piston rings on the 3.2 that I am working on. THe oil rings should fit your 3.0

PM me

The rings get brittle on these engines I would replace all the rings with new sets. You can flex a new ring to some extent if your rings are breaking when trying to install them they are too brittle.

Exactly why I replaced all of mine. First oil ring I tried to put back in snapped.
I'm sure Wayne could overnight you a set if you called now.

Thanks, all. Yel, I sent you a PM. The local VW guy got a set for me today. For the sake of convenience, I went with that.

Kodi and Tim, did you install new rings on Alusil? I was hoping to avoid that, given that everything seems to be in good shape.

Yes, new rings on my 81,000 mile Alusil cylinders. 3,000 miles so far, and no problems with the rings. Car was leaking more oil from my poor rocker shaft installation than it uses in the engine. (Fixed now) Not a puff of blue from the exhaust at all.
I just followed Wayne's break in procedures to a tee, and all has been good.
