doing a 3.2 ('89 engine) into a 914-6
A. see the pictures and related descriptions below - i want to know what these components are, what they do, B. are any of these necessary to the engine running normally in a backdated chassis, C. can i throw 'em away and cap/plug the ports they attach to? 1. vacuum gizmo parts 13-18-22 and associated hoses ![]() . ![]() 2. air valve apparatus parts 28-30-32-36 ![]() 3. oil tank breathing tubes parts 25-26-28 . ( i will attach the 26 crankcase tube to my oil tank); do i need the 28 tube which returns to the intake bellows if i am simply venting tank overboard as oem - what happens if i do not have a 'round-trip" positive crankcase suction? i do not seem to have the 25 tube ???? ![]() TIA Larry_M .

1- the vacuum accelerator apparatus is not needed. You don't have a brake booster. Plug it off on the intake system
2- you don't need this valve either- plug it on the connections to the intake system 3- You can plug this on the intake system as well. Remove #28 hose completely. The two other breathers connect to the oil tank and neck , as originally done on the 914-6 If you are running an original 914 trans, be careful on hard take offs in 1st. The torque from the 3.2 will break the mainshaft and leave you with no 1st gear. BTDT ! have fun; car will be a rocket

Larry thanks for posting the question. I'm just starting to strip parts off an 86 3.2 to install into my sixer. Going from a 2liter 6 to the 3.2 should be fun.

thanks to everyone!
- i went by Gary Clark's shop in Auburn, CA & got pretty much same opinions the oil tank return hose port can be capped off at the MAF elbow - on a carrera, the oil venting system is completely closed to atmosphere , - therefore the "pumping" from blowby in the crankcase is vented back into the intake (for SMOG reasons) - one thing i did note on the 3.2 is that it appears a fair amount of oily vapor had been sucked into that MAF elbow - we MUST retain a significant volume outlet for venting that pumping blowby - no engine has perfectly ZERO blowby - in my case i already have the tank externally vented via a race-required catch tank - (just as was done in the original GT's) - mine came that way from the mother country The air valve gizmo is for purging fuel vapors from the tank canister, i now realize that the 2-port sensor in the throttle body is listed as "thermostatic" - so it closes soon after the engine starts & warms - therefore the air valve is irrelevant to normal running - i'll just cap it maybe someday i'll fiddle with adding cruise control, so it's nice to have a manifold vacuum source - ( that is assuming i don't sell the car anytime soon) fwiw - i found a source today for 22mm oil hose - which i need to connect my engine oil hard line outpipe to the 911 oil thermostat-valve that feeds the front cooler - Elephant Racing has it & also has a bunch of those BIG METRIC 24-30mm fittings we need for this task - ( this stuff is really hard to find ) yes, i'm keeping the 901 for now & knew about the torque issue - I do have a good 915, but the expense & hassles of that conversion is beyond my current interest - (i have 3 good 901's, and have talked to several guys who say they'll stand up to 200 hp, if not hot-rodded in 1st, so will cross my fingers!) and so it goes .... ![]() Larry

Is there a thread on simplifying these systems on a Carrera hot rod? Seems like I dont need the vacuum and breather systems to be that complex on a non emission car that has had the cruise and many other systems removed.

I think the guys have provided your answers above ![]() just cap it all off and assure yourself you have not left any places where unwanted additional air can get drawn in behind the MAF flapper to upset the air-fuel ratio intended by the factory .

you can either vent the oil tank to atmosphere as done in the olden days - see my comments above and Daron's comments - - or keep it vented into the intake as oem - but you can't plug it what i have seen on several cars is that the prior owner mis-routed the 2 vent hoses by swapping them onto the wrong pipes at the tank - in that case you will lose the air-oil-separation feature built into the tank & you will have an oily mess in the engine comp't on early 911 cars the vent to atmosphere hose simply went into the air cleaner housing .

Sounds good, I guess I can get rid of one of the vent lines - I wonder if any of the vacuum stuff can be minimized.
