Oxygen Sensor Relay, CIS cold start problem, a cheap 1st check

Fellow Pelicans,
I would like to provide an update to an old post I responded to when I thought I had a bad gas problem and suggested a Techron clean out which had appeared to help me or so I thought. Well after thinking things had cleared up and having a repeat symptom I decided to do some further searching and after reading many threads I concluded that I would start with the oxygen sensor relay 1st (~$15.00, free in labor and I get to know my car just that much more, stretching my neck and looking upside down under my front passenger seat).

My latest symptoms were hard start on cold start with a back fire or two or three and even after it would starting I would get major back fires, bucking in gear, low revs and stalling.

I have an 83 SC and I took a chance on replacing the Oxygen Sensor relay (Bosch p/n 0-332-0190109 ordered directly thru Pelican and this one has the diode between pins 85 and 86 just like OEM p/n 821-951-253). Well low and behold after 2 turns of the key it started up immediately, held an idle as normal and even when I gave it gas there was no back firing as in the past. I won't be able to drive it tomorrow as I have to take the 2 boys to school, but I suspect my issue has been resolved.

Note: As many have suggested before relays may not go bad like a light bulb, they can fail intermittently (ie work sometime, not work other times, and then work again, and so on.

The power of Pelican and searching the knowledge base has come through again.
Thanks a million,
Patrick

Thanks, my problem as well. Does the cold affect the relays, I wonder?

This post saved my rear. I was having identical symptoms. An experienced mechanic told me it was a bad WUR. Then I saw this post, popped a new relay in purchased from our host, and bingo - problem solved!
