oil cooler fan

What size oil cooler fan are you guys using for the front mount oil cooler in the fender? 6.5" pusher? or ? size?

i need to have some additional cooling for my 930 when I get stuck in traffic after coming off of boost it gets pretty warm to about 210* or so. Summer would be much worse.

Thanks,

John

The fan must be a pusher and mounted in front of the cooler. Otherwise, the tire will make contact with a pull fan on tight turns. I mounted a 7.5 SPAL on my 77, but there's room for a 9". I kept it simple and only have a manual on/off switch for when the oil starts to get in the upper ranges.
I think there are several threads here, including proper wiring if you go with a thermostat.

I used the Spahl 7.5 as well. It fit perfect. I even used the OEM metal mounts. To make the mounts work you have to drill new holes through them. 7.5 fit perfect for my 89. Larger would have created and issue for me.

I picked up a 7" fan that I plan to get installed before it warms up around here. My early 86 did not originally come with a fan. Here are two threads with some good info in them. -J

Installation of my $15 Oil Cooler Fan.

I plan to use this fan on my Oil Cooler.

It depends on the size of your wallet/checkbook.....

I upgraded our '86 3.2 with the factory front oil cooler fan (used)/wiring harness (new),
and the Nasson 210F-on/195F-off sensor.

A BMW sensor will also work.

Also, I wired the fan relay coil to the fuel pump fuse.

The factory oil temp sensor is set to 248F which is too hot.

You may have to add a sensor bung on your oil cooler.

pm for additional details.

Good luck,

Gerry

Hmmm. I was about the throw the spal fan idea out when I saw the $15 fan, but then the ER fan looks nice at 4.5amps! with 400cfm. Glad I posted this. More options than I thought there were.

Sensor.

Yes, and by the way, that pic is from one of my earlier posts.

The Nasson sensor can be custom ordered.

I used the aftermarket kit from Elephant Racing. 8" pusher fan, 2.25 in thick. The install kit includes the relay, fuse, wiring and an adjustable controller so you can set the fan to come at whatever temp you want between 170 & 210. Not quite plug and play because I had to fab an upper cooler bracket and move the horns a bit, but you pretty much need to do that regardless of which fan you use.
I put this in about 5 or so years ago and it still works fine. Makes a huge difference on oil temps in summer when I'm running the AC.

I don't know the quality of the $15 fan. It may be great. My suggestion is that you put in a good one. You won't want to do this again. I chose the Spal based on its good reputation.

Yes Gerry, this is the picture you e-mailed me a while back.
I see that the original "bad guy" only has one connector while the BMW has 2. How do you correctly connect the BMW switch? Thanks!

Send a message via Skype™ to DRACO A5OG
you can also pick up an adjustable thermal switch with relay and wiring at pepboys $40.

I picked one up for my rear lid fan, ready to install.

The factory harness has one connection to the switch, and another connection which grounds to the oil cooler.

When using the BMW switch, one wire (hot),goes to the switch, and the other (ground), grounds to the oil cooler between the base of the switch, and the oil cooler.
