failed cal smog .. need advice .. help

went to the smog shop today and thought all would go well but I am posting here so it obviously did not ...

HC 15 and 25 mph test well below max
CO 15 mph test max 1.36 meas 3.02
25 mph test max 1.16 meas 3.22
NO 15 and 25 mph test well below max

When the tech did the drive test on the wheels it did sound like he was lugging the car ..
15 mph rpm states 1526
25 mph rpm states 2390

from what I have read this leans toward my O2 sensor being faulty or air filter ... I have both those items in my cart here at Pelican and looking for additional recommendations ...

My air filter appears clean, the O2 sensor has not been changed, the cat is original, oil and filter done last month, spark plugs changed 2 years ago(8k miles) ....

Car was not a California car originally ... so if I change the cat does it need a "california carb approved cat"

Moving out of California not really an option .. but sounds better every day ...

Any advise would be great .... Thanks in advance ...

Steve

Steve first call Porsche shops in your area and ask them who you should use to smog your car. (who does a good job) Then, pay your smog guy to do a smog pre check to see where your car is at and if it will even pass. That is what I did. Also most important drive the hell out of your car before you have it smogged. Really hot. I did this stuff when I took my 85 in and it passed. I just think the pre check is a good idea. Worth the money.

I drove it for about an hour prior to going in .. figuring that would be enough to get hot ...

One thing that he did that is kinda sticking in my mind is it appeared that he lugged it when on the machine ... he said he was in second gear .. which for a 15 and 25 mph test seems to me would be a first gear test ....

I have had my last three tests at this same station but not with this tech ... Maybe I should get a hold of them on monday ... and see if the other tech I have used before is in

He was probably trying to get it to pass. I think the new O2 sensor should help, also make sure the brown wire under the driver's seat is connected.

Good advice. This is what I did the first two times I had to get mine smogged.

This is the way to go. My mechanic actually smogged the car for me after I failed the test twice on my own. Ended up being the Steve Wong chip that was causing issues.

Why not invest in the T-allen CO adjustment tool and lean out the mixture yourself to make it pass? It really is not that difficult to do.
