New chip is here! Any install tips or break in tips?

My DME chip is here. I plan on putting it in this afternoon if I can get out of the office early enough.

Any tips on install in an 89 Carrera Coupe with power seats? Most posts seem to say you can get at the computer with the seat all the way back.

I have 93 octane fuel in there already so I should be ok there.

Any advice to make install and first drive smoother appreciated.

Thanks

My advice is to take your time opening the ECU to get at the chip. It's a circuitboard sandwich and you don't want to manhandle it, thereby damaging something. Carefully separate the two halves of the sandwich. There's a trick to gettting the two white plastic posts to release from the boards. You must pull the little plastic pins out of the end of the posts! Make sure to note where the notch in the chip is located when you take it off the circuit board as well.

There is no break-in required with a chip.
Raise electric seat as far a possible.
Unbolt DME. Use a magnetic pickup tool to get the nuts and washers.
You *may* want to remove the loop that hold the cable in order to get a little more slack in the cable.
I assume you have directions for opening the box and replacing the chip.
Don't expect much of a difference in performance.

Another thing to do before pulling out the computer is after moving the seat back at least turn the ignition off (electric seats remember) or disconnect the battery.... or both.

Not good to mess with computer equipment with the power still connected.

Next thing is to put the computer on the table and open it up. Before you start playing with the two boards and swapping the chips out, ground your hands on the metal cover or frame and do this again and again if you get up or move your feet or hands around. Static electricity has ruined many a chip or circuit and grounding yourself helps keep this from happening.

Kevin,
I've never seen these white plastic posts. All the 911 and 944 Turbo DME's I've opened all had black posts that you pried the female part open a little to remove male pin. What DME did you see this sort of post on?
thanks,
Chris

After replacing the aluminum cover, I would not fold the locking tabs back because they will break after opening and closing them a few times. Instead, use a big washer under the mounting nuts to hold the box and cover in place when you put it back.

Chris,

The two posts that hold the board together near the big gray ribbon cable are an off white color on my 87 3.2 911 DME. It's the only Bosch one i've opened so I don't know much about them. The part # on the cover does agree with the model year of my car, so I hope it's the right DME?

Thanks,

I might suggest disconnecting the battery, then grounding yourself (touch a ground source like the seat frame) before you install the chip. I have worked in electronics for years and the chances of frying the chip due to static is very small, but then again I know Mr. Murphy pretty well…
