lost ignition key - where to start?

1966 912, and I have no ignition key. Can it be re-keyed? If so, just any lock smith?

Yes a locksmith should be able to do it ... I would give a few a call first ... it would be easier if you remove the mechanical part of the lock and bring it down ...

although I would first try getting a key cut for the cylinder .. if the doors are original its easier to remove a handle and take it down .. it would save you a service call fee ..

I'm pretty sure the early 911/912's had different keys for the doors and ignition.

Removing the ignition switch housing should be pretty easy. Unscrew the plastic cover over the switch (on dash) and drill out the shear bolts underneath.

Once the switch is out, you can unscrew the electrical switch from the mechanical part of the housing. You can then use a screwdriver in the switch to start the car.

There should be a label on the lock (not the electrical switch) with the key code. Sometimes it can be read without removing the lock though that may require a mirror. With the code any locksmith can cut you a key.

I'm not sure about a 66, but removing the ignition lock on my 73 was quite a bit more involved.
It's much easier for a locksmith to rekey with the assembly out of the car.

do you have a locking glovebox? You can remove that lock easier, was it the same key?

The ignition key would unlock the glovebox, but there was also a red colored "valet key" that would work in the ignition & doors, but NOT open the glovebox, so I'm not sure.

I had 4 early 900 cars..the first was a '66 912 with the 3 holes dash. On all four I just carried a single key on a fob. For the life of me, can't remember if the '66 had a lock on the glovebox. I know the '69, '70, and '72 cars did.

66 911 has the same key for the doors, glovebox and ignition. The key code is engraved on the lock lever (see photo below) I bought a wreck w/o any keys, sent this code (K35X) to a UK locksmith and he cut me two perfect keys that work well.
