Rough Idle 82SC when warm

My 82SC just starting idling rough when it is warm. It hunts when first started, the WUR kicks in the idle increases and it is smooth, then when warm the idle drops down very low, is rough and the exhaust smells awful. After driving for a while it is a little less rough, but not normal and still smells bad. I am running without the O2 sensor. I tried disconnecting the frequency valve relay and that made it worse and stalled the engine. Incidently, I added oil to the car the day this started and although I didn't overfill, the level is on the high side. Help!!!

That is probably your CDI box, on the left wall in the engine compartment. It will whine until the car is started.

exhaust smells awful and still smells bad ...running without the O2 sensor.

Classic symptoms of over rich mixture.

Try connecting the 02 sensor back and having the CO set to spec or slightly rich of spec.

Cheers,

Joe

I disconnected my o2 sensor about 6 months ago. At the time I found a rusted out frequency valve relay. I replaced the relay, had the CO mixture and timing set with an analyzer and the car ran great. I never bothered replacing the o2 because the old one is rusted into the exhaust and the car is running great (have a new 02 sensor in the drawer).

I definately think it is a mixture problem because of the smell. However, the car has normal power and doesn't backfire or knock. My thought was possibly a vacuum leak. Used to happen to my old Z all the time. But I don't hear a vacuum sound from the engine but I am going to search.

thanks

Hurray!!!!

That was one quick fix, less than 5 min ..... I went outside to remove the oil cap while the engine was running and no change in the idle, still rough... presumably a vacuum leak. Put back on and the idle improved back to normal. Shame on me. When I added the oil, the oil cap did not seat well (did it in a dark garage). OOPS!
No longer smells, I think my wife will ride in it again.

Thanks everyone.
