Side view mirror gremlins...Switch/joystick removal?

The mirrors on my '87 coupe only move up. Both, just up. I'm assuming this is because something is wrong with the joystick in the door or the connections somewhere. I've found a few wiring diagrams, and a post that confirms it is "easy" to remove, but I can't seem to figure out how to remove it. It sure looks like the interior panel of the door needs to come off, and that seems like it would be a pain...

In the meantime, can I just manhandle the mirrors to the correct orientation without damaging any parts/gears?

You can manhandel them. I do think that you have to remove the panel to get to the switch.

I believe that your joystick for the mirror is located on the front portion of the arm bolster at the top of the door panel. There is a small plastic plug at either end of this arm bolster. Remove the plugs to gain access to the screws behind. After you have removed the screws the arm bolster will be loose, you can pull the bolster up to get access to the joy stick. Also, to remove the joystick ther is a "quarter size" plastc surround at the base of the joystick. There should be 2 holes directly across eachother on this quarter size plastic base. The base itself is threaded and holds the switch in place. There is a special tool that spreads the gap betiween these two holes but I have used a small screwdriver or even an old pair of calipers to spread the gap and unscrew the switch base. remember , counter clockwiise to loosen.

I hope this helps ,

Cheers,

Needle nose pliers work well, too. Also, IIRC, the knob on the top of the joystick just pulls off straight up.

Excellent, this wasn't that big a deal. I was hoping WD40 would solve (all) my problems, but alas, the switch may be broken. I'm gonna give a test before I take much more apart. It might just as easily be a ground somewhere (anywhere).

My mirror moves in one direction only. What do you think is wrong?
