Question I'm an idiot & questions

I had the car plugged to a trickle charger and I unplugged the extension cord but not the charger, twice when I had it out the tach jumped to 6-7000 and at the same time it seemed like the car shut off, like a hiccup. Unplugged the charger from the battery for the ride home and it seemed to work fine but a turn signal is now burnt out.
Did I screw this up by leaving a cheap trickle charger hooked up , have I screwed something up? Why would the tach jump?
It's an 87 930

I think unplugging has nothing to do with the tach jumping. Just a coincidence. But for the record , my wife says " I am an idiot."

No connection.

Took my car off the tender yesterday after 3 months and the fuel pump was screaming....no relation.

Its the 172xxxmiles that got to the pump

Wife says I'm an idiot!

I think the 87 930 is CSI Injection with CDI ignition correct?

If so I suspect the points or the trigger device in the distributor that triggers the CDI ignition.

The other possibly is a faulty ignition switch, with the car at idle get under the dash and tap the backside if the ignition switch with the plastic handle of a screw driver. In my 84 I had a faulty ignition switch that resulted in engine shutdown for a second or two.

Then also put a volt meter across your battery to be sure you are not over charging. You should have 13.2 to 14.8 vdc with engine running at idle you may be on the low side 13.2v but at 3000RPM you should be above 14vdc but below 15.0vdc. And never in the 16+vdc! Sometimes if the voltage regulator wacks out you can get over charge voltage well above 16vdc.

Not likely the cause of the burn out....and for the record, I'm not an idiot as I have no wife to tell me I is...but hell, I could be wrong.....

FYI, if the signals lite up but don't blink it could be the relay.....pull it, smack it clean it, re install...

I broke mancode with a nice diamond ring for the missus. I am no longer an idiot, and I feel so much better about that...

How old is your battery? Might it have a bad cell? Cheap insurance to replace it if you do not know its condition.

Up-date
The battery is new as is the alt., worked good when I put it away in Dec.
I plugged it back in the charger and it had the battery fully charged today, started up fine and I pulled out of the garage to the drive way to warm it for a minute and I looked and the tach was floating around at 5-6000 while the car was idleing, tried to blip the throttle and there was nothing , no quick rev but a real sluggish feel, bogging down, I shut it off and waited a minute and it started up no problem and ran fine for about 20 minutes or so, went for fuel and it started fine at the station and back home with no running problems, I'm confused. The bulb that burnt out was replaced about 4 months ago so it could be a coinsidence but I wonder

"..turn signal burnt out..."

Might be random or it might be the result of (attempted) overcharging the battery.

Wild, REALLY WILD, hairy-AXX guess. Intermittent shorting of alternator stator windings (when you hit bump in the road??) causes HUGE magnetic field (RFI/EMI)which couples into the magnetic pickup wihin the distributor. That, in turn, results in multiple false firing of the CDI (or even otherwise). Tach "hits" the rev-limit, rev-limit shuts the fuel pump down.

In my case the battery was most defintely being overcharged and once the tach bounced all the way to the rev-limit the rev-limit circuit would latch up requiring a period with the ig. switch completely off before the engine could be restarted.

Analysis of the internals of the alternator indicated that stator winding insulatiors were so old and brittle most had fallen off.

CDI ? I should know that one but the name slips me, is that the box under the seat? Did the 930 have those?

Capacitive Discharge box.....it's the whiney thing in the engine. 3 or 6 pin depending on the year....8 pin for turbo. Was eliminated when DME/Motronic came along.
