I want to pick your guys' brains on something on my car (1980 911 SC)..
This started a few days ago, after coming back from dinner after a hot day. When I started the car, I got a horrible squeek from the engine compartment. It was intermitant for 30 seconds, and then stopped. I shut it off, and checked the oil. No problem there. I did drive the car home very carefully and parked it for a few days until I had a chance to look at it. I have not been able to get the noise to happen again after playing with it today though. However, I note that the belt to the A/C compressor seems to wobble a lot when the a/c is activated, but runs smoothly when the A/C is off. There seems to be normal tension on the belt, but I have no way to check. I am wondering: do you think that the noise is somehow connected to the belt issue? also, if they are not connected what do you think the noise should be? Should I be worried about the belt at all? I am thinking that it may be some issue with the A/C compressor, since i have been running the A/C a lot. BTW the A/C seems to function normally, I get cold air. Thoughts? Thanks! Chuck Chuck

Could be the A/C belt. Mine shakes pretty good when running air conditioner. (York compressor). Check tension on belt. If noise repeats, turn off air to rule it out.

I think they make a brace to prevent the compressor from vibrating to much. No sure, a mechanic here in town mentioned to me.

Chuck,
Since it probably needs adjusting ... take the A/C belt off to test for the vibration. Be sure to check your alternator/fan belt tightness, too! If you don't have s total of EXACTLY six pulley shims in the alternator pulley 'stack' ... that can cause a vibration that is/wiil be destroying your fan hub and outer pulley half! Summertime is a bad time to ignore belt/fan/pulley issues! You don't want to repeat the recent 20-minute engine-cooking ordeal!
