from memory

there are 2 red wires and 2 black wires.
run the heavy red wire directly to power, like the starter. DO NO run it to the switch.
the other large black wire goes to ground.

the other black wire goes to the coil and there is another wire that goes to the coil. wire them DIRECTLY to the coil.

the other red wire is to the ignition switch.

then you have the wire to the dizzy.

if you have the 2 black wires crossed, it may not work. i would not ground both blacks, even though the - coil side is grounded. run them directly to the coil.

Well I rescued the beloved porsche from the porsche service dept. and by direction tested the msd box. After changing my ground location and wiring the red directly to the battery the boxed passed the test. Still won't fire. Everything has been checked. Someone said I'm not supposed to have an SC dizzy(#0231184007) with magnetic pick up that goes CCW and that my 2.7 engine,(911/85), is meant to have a points dizzy that runs CW. Thoughts? Clear as mud?

if it is in an turning, someone did what was needed to make it work, but you need to check the firing order.

verify the direction the rotor turns. line up Z1 but here is where you have to be careful. remove the left upper intake cover and as you turn the crank, watch the #1 rocker. once it closes, bring Z1 to TDC and stop.
check the rotor direction and verify it is pointing to #1. then the next one is #6 and so forth.
if not, just wire it to #1 and then follow the firing order.

check for spark out of the coil.

you redid the power to the battery. check the smaller red wire for power with the key on.

verify the wiring to the coil.

i believe you can use the white wire from the MSD to test it. you can ground/lift it, you can check for spark out of the coil. you need to make sure that at least the MSd will fire and the coil is good if it still does not work.

This morning I tried turning the engine with my extra long 19mm wrench and the bolt head at the crank was loose. I kept turmimg clockwise to the right and instead of turning the engine it just keeps spinning to the right as if it were stripped. I rotated the bolt head CCW to the left and the bolt immediately began to back out. I guess that no matter what the problem was before I have a bigger issue now that will require dropping the engine and taking things apart or having a drink, curling up on the bathroom floor and having a cry.

did you ever get it fixed?

i just put an MSD in my 930. i had to swap the 2 wires that go to the dist. the MSD said the violet wire was +, i had to connect that one to the sheild and the green wire to the center conductor. when i showed my setup to my porsche mechanic friend, he had always questioned the MSD hookup, but i dont think he was a fan of them anyway. i looked at the signal out of the dist and it is opposite of what the MSD needs to fire. this made my timing about 50 degrees advanced. also, i did not need a tach adapter for my tach to work.
