i believe when i was spinning i hit the reflector on the ground that caused that damage, if you really look at the pick you can see the scrap goin sideways on the tire before it actually hit the rim........

no i have those tires on there already for 5months, i was on the 210 west goin towards the 5, it is rough possibe pot hole cracked the inner part of the rim

RE 5th. Gear

Start with the simple things... coupler and shifter.. check the conical screw under the shifter that holds the metal cup to the shift rod....

Motor and trans mounts

That will get you started....

NeedSpace 03-13-2013 07:45 PM

I agree, check your motor mounts. The only hypothesis I can think of is the slide and the torque of the high speed spin causes the mounts to shift putting the linkage out of wack. Perhaps it bent or dislodged your shift linkage.

Here's another hypothesis...while careening for your life sideways down the highway, it could be possible your body slammed into your stickshift knob pushing your shift mounting ever so slightly off kilter. I did have a somewhat similar problem on an old VW Rabbit (not caused by a slide but loosening bolt). I figured out that you could get it into 5th if you pushed slightly down before going up to 5th (if I can recall). This procedure worked until I found the loose bolts.

How what it be if i messed up 5th?

ivangene 03-13-2013 08:51 PM

I agree...you may have moved the shifter and the coupler shifted position

I was also thinking ... that's a lot of rubber on the road...if it was dry, you could have bent any number of things, but most likely, something moved...so start with those

porschetub 03-14-2013 12:21 AM

did you hit a rock, looks like a impact buckle on the rim.

DanielDudley 03-14-2013 01:10 AM

Did you slide into something sideways ?

I believe the lane reflectors or dividers,

kinein 03-14-2013 02:04 AM

Well the insurance is paying for repairs i want a thorough inspection of suspension, transmission, and motor. I just want my car back like it was before. I need rims too.

BTW, I would have this tire bronzed and made into a coffee table. Talk about a conversation piece! Just glad you made it out unharmed.

...unless he had a death grip on the shift lever and tried with all his might to put some english on the spinning car to keep from hitting anything.

yes i had a death grip for sure. If you only knew, i couldve been hit by oncoming traffic

theiceman 03-14-2013 05:24 PM

of course you could have seriously damaged your gear box unless you got the clutch in before spinning. this is exactly why you go " both feet in" before you get to 180 degrees. think about it, you were at speed then instantly made the wheels go the opposite way . my guess is you were in 5th when it happend and you didnt get the clutch in in time.

you did the equivalent of jamming it in reverse at highway speed.

you may need a 5th gear set.

A guy I know on the 914 list has a 6 conversion. He spun it on an AX course....ran the motor bass ackwards.....tossed the cookies on the motor.

Any idea what you hit?

As to the 5th gear....disconnecting the linkage and hand shifting would be an idea. See if is still reachable/usable. R&R on the coupler is another idea. Visual inspection....

porsche930dude 03-14-2013 06:16 PM

somebody a few months ago on here had a rim crack and kinesis replaced all 4 free of charge. I think he sent them the serial#s off of them and that was basicly all they cared about. You should definatly give them a call and find out. maybe your rim was infact defective and prone to break eventually

I would go with the sphincter theory because they are shy when their owner is frightened or embarrassed. - Right ;)

kinein 03-16-2013 09:46 PM

Leave my spinchter alone. It had enough drama that day lol

So the question is how much you think it would be to replace the 5th gear set? For labor and all. Just want a idea for worst case scenario.
