CV Torx Bolt sources?

I want to change all my CV bolts to this type (or the internal torx type), don't need to be drilled -

No sure what diameter bolts my 78 uses, believe 8mm x 1.25... I'll measure the length (and dia. if no one pipes in 1st) when I get home. Never have a problem with Torx, can't stand coming across a semi-stripped out allen bolt!

Checked McMaster Carr, biggest they go is 6mm x 1.0, Can't find anything (did get a pile of Schnorr washers though) on Fastenal...

Try looking for 12 point, flanged bolts. ARP makes a bunch of sizes and grades. -J

Nice find Rick.

If you want to unload some of that box of 100 you buy Gary, let me know! Although, if I know you, you'll use up that box of 100 in no time at all doing the racecar bolt inspection replacment/discard routine

IMO, even though the article that beautious picture came from says they're bunk, I think the spreader plates are worthwhile on our low tech old dinosaurs.

Torque Dist'n Washer- 100mm CV Joint of VW Bug

The M8 size is NLA here on Pelican and i've had to source them from VW bug performance sellers. If you have the plates or decide to get them, you'll want to increase your CV bolt length to 55mm I think. I recently bought some std. allen head bolts and I think I got 55 to ensure I had enough thread engagement in the drive flange. Have to check on that to be sure though......

Nice hardware!

McMaster most likely carries them if you know the tread pitch and size.

Regards
Dave

Hehe..

The ones I just took out are 48mm so I will go with the 50mm length from Maryland Metrics. I use schnorr washers (bought about 300 in M4, M6, and M8 from Fastenal), have never had a single bolt loosen up.

M4 schnorr? Are those even possible to see without a microscope? I was sorting nuts & bolts yesterday and was laughing at how small even the M6 are!!! Yes, I resorted to sorting my nuts & bolts because i'm so sick of the disorganization in my garage with just one small fastener organizer thing............

I was just tired of looking for them, now i'll spread them all over my garage and just pick them up as I need them..

Just ordered the bolts, their form is absolute torture but I "think" I got it right...

Yah I couldn't stand searching on there any longer, despite the candy store of great fasteners. I'll go back when my retinas heal from the burn of the yellow background.

Somebody in web design could make a good buck re-doing their website! Just saying......

I'm using these ones. They are 12 point with a locking plate to keep them from loosening up in service:

Gentlemen, 12 Point and Triple Square are NOT the same!
The angles on a standard 12 point socket/bit are 360 degrees divided by 12 = 30 degrees per notch.
The angles on a Triple Square socket/bit are 90 degrees each notch. A Square having 4 sides at 90 degrees each, times three = Triple Squares
Torx are close but no cigar in most cases.
Google can help because Triple Square is also known as a few other names

I use these, they are classified as VW CV locking bolts.

8MM 12 points for the 911's. $4.99 per side, heck of a deal.
