Help identify 915 transmission......

How can you tell a 915 transmission came from (year/model) by its number alone? For example, I'm looking to buy a 915 transmission with 915/63 and 74D1455 stamped at the bottom of the housing. Where do I look for reference? Thanks.

Tony

74D1455 decodes as:
7 = Transmission for 6-cylinder engine.
4 = Transmission type; 5-gear 911; USA, Japan.
D = Model year 1983.
1455 = Serial number.

This should be type 915/63.
Gears:
1 = 11:35.
2 = 18:32.
3 = 23:29.
4 = 26:26.
5 = 28:23.
R&P = 8:31
Info from 1983 Porsche Spec Book WKD 423 120 and Service Information WKD 451 021.

All the castings are aluminum.
This is equipped for the electronic speedometer and not for the mechanical speedometer.
This has 100 mm CV joint axle flanges (six M8 bolts).
This is equiped with the over-center (Ω-spring) clutch release mechanism.

Best,
Grady

Wow.......

Grady,

Thanks for the very informative data you have provided. I was just hoping to find out what year/car it belonged but received great technical data about the transmission I like to buy. Thanks again.

Not to hijack here but can you help me out too?
What does a 915/60 707 24037 stamped on the bottom mean?

Here is some more info on my trans

It is from a ROW 78 SC
Has 4 bolt flanges with coarse splines

That appears to have 8 digits when it should have only 7 in that period, but at a guess could be a 1977, there is no 8 to suggest a 1978 MY.

915/60 707 0001> is a '77 911 5 speed

'77 C3 used 915/61 as did the '78/79 SC

'77 was also a transition year early cars had mg case late aluminum

Found your post with a photo, looks like the last 7 is spurious. So 7072403 is a 77 5 speed ROW transmission. What is your VIN?

The VIN tag shows a 1978 VIN, however the transmission is 1977, so not original to the car.
