Question Need some creative thinking on sun visors...

Throwing this out there to see if anyone has any bright ideas on how to get past this little log jam.

I recently replaced the front windshield while I was redoing my interior. I decided to take the opportunity to do a little mod. I decided to install a Gentex auto-dimming mirror with Homelink buttons for the garage doors.

The cool thing is that I can mount a Blendmount to the mirror post for my radar detector. I ran the wiring for the detector and the mirror through the passenger side A-pillar while I had the headliner out. I will post a full write-up with pics if anyone is interested. I don't think anyone has done this before AFAIK.

Anyway, the Gentex mirror is a little bigger then the factory mirror and I need to place it up higher on the windshield. The issue now is that the visors are useless because the thin part that normally passes over the mirror is now too tall.

So far nothing I've done to the car couldn't be undone as I've kept everything that was original. Therefore, I'd like to keep the old floppy visors.

I know the visors are NLA, so I'm looking for ideas. Find a "donor" frame that an interior shop could use to make a new set that would accommodate the new rearview mirror? Is there some other visor from a different year that could be used as a donor?

Thanks in advance...

You can't buy happiness, but you can buy car parts which is kind of the same thing.

Mirror

I would like to see your mirror install/write up. I've considered doing the same.

As for the visors can't help other than I removed mine 6 years ago and never reinstalled. 83 Targa visors wer bloated so I removed. 4 years later picked up a good set but decided I didn't like them with the top off.

I keep a ball cap under the seat for morning/evening when the sun is eye level. Beats visors.

Ok, I'll post it soon.

If I had to do it over again, I wouldn't have installed the visors when I replaced the headliner but now if I take them out I will have ugly holes in my shiny new headliner.

Should I sacrifice the original, albeit, floppy ones?

Remove the visors and cover the holes with a blank w/ matching screw holes. Paint it the color of the headliner or maybe black. Something akin to:

It's totally reversible. Just a thought...

Like it! Especially coupled with the tint idea. Any idea on a source on where to get those?

maybe you could pick up a cheap, used set to modify and re-cover. I bought a set from Weekend Rides on the East Coast and they came in handy.

The other problem I experienced is that the aftermarket mirror I chose to use ended up to close to my eyes. Couldn't find any way to shorten the mounting "stem"

The stem on this mirror is pretty short so no problems with that so far.. And the Blendmount fits it perfectly.

The problem I'm having at the moment is the glue to mount the mirror button. I just went through my second attempt. It's not holding the mirror by itself, let alone with the added weight of the radar detector. The mirror is heavier than the original, but not that much.

I bought the glue from my local FLAPS. Both times I was told to let the button sit with no weight on it for 8-10 hours even though the instructions say it's good in 15 minutes. Did that both times but just tightening the mirror to the button causes it to let go.

Ideas? I guess I'm going to try a different FLAPS that carries a different product...

Not sure what year car you're working on, but FYI Porsche Classic Parts is making new visors for both targa and coupe '74-'89 G series cars.

Not cheap but available.
Pelican or local dealer can get them.

Not sure this will help you, but I found my original targa visors waaay too big, so I cut them in half right along the line Porshe apparently provided just for this purpose :-) Then I covered them in alcantara, the result is 'right-sized' visors that don't get in the way with the top on or off (top is always off BTW).
