Help for A/C removal sc 1983
 

Dear all,

For my second post, (the first one was related to the stock blaupunkt stereo and is still under process...) I will need your help for my A/C removal.
I bought the car in November last year, and leaving in Minnesota, the weather does not allow you to drive in winter!!!
Since spring is coming, I am starting to put my hands in the car.
It is a nice 1983 sc stock, engine rebuilt, almost in mint condition. After sunvisor repair done at Vinyl specialties (amazing repair), and seats repaired locally, the car looks really great.

Since I have no compressor in the engine compartment, I always thought that the car was without A/C.
A week ago after some reading on the forum, I discovered the Smuggler box... which is empty on my car.

As you can see, all the hoses coming to the box have been roughly cutted and no evaporator !!!!!

So the car was previously with A/C, but the POs ( I don't know which one..) somehow, removed essential parts.
Since, I am not an A/C addicted guy, and I would rather spent some money in a 915 rebuilt, I want to remove everything. I read almost all the articles related to the A/C deletion, and was not able to fing a proper diagram of the entire circuit and since, I am just starting to learn about the 911 mechanic, i don't want to make any mistakes.

1- The first question would be if the A/C system is a closed circuit, or is at one point connected to the engine?

2-If no, can I remove everything (condenser, drier, hoses, front blower above condenser) with no risk?

3-Is there anything else that can be removed?

4-According to my empty smuggler box, it means that I have nothing which can blow air in the car. is it right?
It means that I have to follow frankc thread about retrofitting A/C to have at least something blowing air in the car?

1) The "a/c air" system is recirculation system, meaning outside air is not mixed with the air conditioning air; the ac system simply pulls air from under the driver's and passg's side foot boards through the evaporator and blows it out the center vent above the radio and the two side vents.

2) Future risk... lower vehicle value since its not stock and missing ac,
Current risks....;
Close up trapezoid hole between pass'g side bulkhead and smugglers box,
close up round hole between driver's side bulkhead and smugglers box,
close up two holes where front condenser blower assy was,
close up hole for evap box drain tube in bottom of smugglers box well,
where ever you remove a fastener that entered the body, such as screws that held ac refrigerant lines, drier strap, etc.... seal up the hole

3) 5 refrigerant hoses and all associated hold down clamps,
receiver drier and its strap,
evaporator box and its two brackets
under pass'g foot board the trapezoid plenum with the shut resistor pack inside,
the electrical harness between the thermostat, fan speed control switch, shunt resistor pack and ac relay in smugglers box well,
front condenser with crash grill and blower fan,
deck lid condenser with center spar bracket,
compressor with all associated brackets;
toss out the drier and refrigerant lines,
cap off the two condensers ports, the evaporator and TXV port, and compressor ports; there will be residual ac refrigerant oil in these items so don't tip them over.

4) You have a fresh air blower and vent control system (top row, 2 sliders, in the center dash), this provides outside air into the cockpit. You could play around with redirecting fresh air to come through the center vent and side vents via
the 90 degree elbow where the outlet tube of the evaporator box connected; and there are other posts in the forum on the subject

Yep. Kuehl pretty much summed it up. I removed mine in total last summer.

I did elect to reinstall the smugglers box blower (less the evaporator) to use as a recirc air blower in the cabin, but this is not necessary.

There are several ways to fill the holes from the hose brackets under the car. Strip caulk (3M) is popular. I decided to reinstall the sheet metal screws with new OEM rubber washers from Porsche, along with a stainless steel washer on each hole to seal it. This way if I ever decide to reinstall the A/C or I sell the car to someone who wants to, it will be easy to do.

This all dead weight where you live. Further south AC is required for most of us.

On second thought, on removing the Evap box, you could keep it is place, less evap,
and use it's recirculation mode to move more air around while having the fresh air levers
in the dash open, that would give you more circulation and the evap box with motor might weigh in at best at 5 lbs tops (just lighten up on the Turkey and holiday treats and that will balance everything out for ya).

Finally some time to come back to the removal.
Small question, what is the purpose of the resistor, or what ever is in the trapezoid hole? (see picture)

I will seal back an alu foil like for the condenser.
What can I do with the wires?
Is it useful for any thing later on, when I will put a blower in the smuggler box?

The spring coil resistors control the fan speed, depending upon which position
you have your evap fan speed set on, power will either flow through none of the resistors
or through them which lowers the fan speed. There is thermal contact in it a well that is 'suppose' to cut the power if the spring coil resistors get too hot.

You can leave the electrical plug off and just put it to the side, the plug has recessed female contacts... so doubtful if you could have a short.

Is it useful for later on? Well, yes. If you decide to put ac back in the car or if you sell the car the new owner can have all the original parts.

Just finished removing mine...all 80+odd lbs of it. Filled the holes with some silicone, removed all brackets and hoses...packaged it up nice, in a HEAVY box in the basement.

The radio and heat are also missing in my Targa...I treat it like a 4-wheeled motorcycle.

Now I've got a nice spot to toss some ice and a 6-pack for car shows ;)

Miss the push back from you know who in this thread, But then again, I also love most anything that floats in a punch bowl.

Coming back to my A/C removal on my 1983 SC I started 3 months ago....
Not very fast I know, but, I have a full time job, and need to spend 100% of my free time with my kids and 200 % with my wife...

So this afternoon, I had 34 min of freedom; spent 40 min to put the car on stands.... (just to let you know, according newbie's posts, I am below the newbie level, and I am French...) To be French might explain the lack of technical words and not the lack of competencies, at least I hope !!! :-0

SO, I was dealing with the hose on the left side of the car , when I saw 2 loose bolts on the left rear axle.
The question is: I tighten them and GO, ..or there is maybe something else to do.
