How do you remove the heat console elec conxns? - Carrera manual heat

I've removed the 4 allen bolts on the heater console on my 87 Carrera but can not remove it because of the electrical connections. I've opened both inspection panels and am fairly sure I see the wires in question soldiered to the 3 position switch. Is there some way to remove the 3 position switch? The parts manual I have only shows auto heat and I can't find anything on PP forums.

If it's on the console

The console is held down by three screws; two screws secure the back (forward edge) of the console. The third screw secures the front of the console and is under the carpet, directly under the parking brake handle. To access these screws:

1.

Remove four screws around the edge of the cover at the forward end of the console.

2.

Remove this cover, then remove the two forward console screws.

3.

If the console has A/C and audio controls, remove the two screws that secures the trim panel inside the console.

4.

Remove the knobs and the switch retaining nuts, then push the switch(es) through the trim hole. Unplug the stereo fader harness connector.

5.

Remove the front console screw directly under the parking brake handle.

6.

Remove the console.

Sorry I may be using the wrong nomenclature - I'm trying to remove the plastic piece that surrounds the heat levers and parking brake and holds the (in my case - manual heat) 3 position rotary switch. I have the 4 allen head cap screws removed and the plastic shroud is moving freely but its connected to the wiring harness in ways I can't figure out, but am fairly sure I see a soldered connection that is vexing me. Since the 3 position rotary switch is the only electrical component I'm wondering if it doesn't just drop out somehow?

Did you disconnect the heater valve servo control rod?

Sorry, for some reason I tought you have Auto Heat.

There are a few wires/connectors attached to the control unit which should be visible
when tilting the unattached cover up, and pulling towards the rear of the car.

Here's a pic for the Auto Heat unit.



As I recall Auto Heat was a pricey option for our '86. ($400).

Did you remove the rubber boot in the front , there is a slot in the bottom. Lift up and unplug. Just had mine off a week ago.

Thanks this did it! Didn't realize that my pinch point was the plastic surround itself, could have sworn it was the wiring.

For the record, the electrical connections do look to be soldered onto the manual heat rotary switch but there is enough slack to get it out of the way to work on the manual heat cable which was the goal of this effort.
