David,
If swapping a plug wire makes a change than I would consider swapping out the old wires on the bad side and seeing what happens. You may have more than one problem going too. How are the cap and rotor? I'd start there since you got a difference from the swap of one wire. Dan |

Dan,
Thanks for the thoughts. I wonder why the engine not still didn't change, with the "new" wire swapped into place, when I spray starting fluid into the carb while idling. In contrast, doing the same thing to the good side of the engine makes a big difference in engine note. David

Dave,
If I understood you right the swap of the one wire helped so I would definitely look at the wires being at least part of the problem. I'd also check the cap, rotor and points. It also sounds like there's a secondary issue here possibly. You did mention that the exhaust on that side isn't hot at all until you swapped the 1 plug wire so that says to me you're not sparking or no fuel or no flow of air. If the car's not getting spark then the fuel isn't going to ignite on that side no matter if it's gas through the carb or fuel you spray into it. If it were just a fuel issue then spraying fuel in would have an effect and you said it didn't. so it sounds like your back to spark again. Dan |

thanks for the tips Dan. Along with the replies on the 914 board, I hope to have the needed info to get the car straightened out tonight.
Have a good weekend, david

Spark gap.
If you have a Permatune the factory spark plug gap may be too tight. Capacitive Discharge Ignitions usually recommend that you open up the spark plug gap. The higher voltage spark can jump a wider gap. Check the Permatune web-site for details.
(This may not be the root cause but it is one more thing to verify.) Tom Zuraw Last edited by thomasz; 01-02-2008 at 01:48 PM.. |
