Coils...

So the resistance check on my coil is out of spec and my car was missing badly. Upon checking the rotor and cap, I can see why.

Obviously going to go through the ignition "while I'm down there" - but my coil doesn't look like the coil I see on pelican. It's a black bosch coil. I suppose I can snag the part # off of it.

Anyone recognize it?

Do I just need one of these? I'd assume so.

the black coil is probably the original German Bosch coil. Unfortunately, they are NLA and we are forced to buy the considerably inferior Brazilian Blue Bosch coil.

Yup that's the correct coil. NLA as mentioned. MSD + MSD coil is a good option.

Seems an awfully expensive solution vs just buying a coil. Is the upgrade a "significant difference" ? This is also my daily driver, no tracking with it, no autocross. Not sure if I want to deal with setting up a trigger system right now lol.

What is wrong with the blue coils exactly vs the original coils?

You get our interest and then don't post pics of the cap and rotor? What was wrong with them? Badly worn? Big cracks? Gray fuzzy monsters on the contacts?

No, not an "upgrade" just easier to get parts for at this point.

I'll snag some up close pics later, this is the only one i could find now.

Basically resistance test is out of spec when I tested it with a multimeter. It was teetering last year on the resistance between "in spec" and "almost there" it's now not there. Developed a bad miss and crap idle. Rotor has only been in there a year and looks like it's been running hot (discolored on the edges, lots of wear).

If you take the cap off, can you wiggle the rotor back and forth? In other words, is there play on the rotor shaft?

MSD blaster coil vs. Bosch coil

Warren Hall recommended the MSD High-Vibration PN8222 back in this thread. I used this coil for a couple of years without issue with my stock CDI box. Wayne has them for $55.
Porsche 911 & Carrera Ignition - Page 11

things that made my SC run better ignition-wise in the order i did them:
Cap, rotor, green wire
then
disasemble and clean dizzy, timing set at WOT
then
magnacores and new plugs
I didnt notice a difference with the blaster coil, so now I have a spare

I wouldn't be so quick to condemn my coil until I ...

-tested it out on another well running car
-checked resistance values of another coil off a well running car
-realized resistance values change a lot with temp so making sure coil is room temp or higher before testing.
-made sure it was hooked up with correct polarity
-realized that most coils fail when they get too hot, so running well when cold as opposed to then running bad after warm-up
