1987 carrera, when I BACK OUT of my garage and turn the steering wheel ALL THE WAY to one side, I hear and feel as if the car front wheels went over a pot hole or a stone, it is is kind of a jerky feeling....
Front wheel bearings and ball joints are new... Can someone help in identifying what seems to be the problem here?....thanks |

I'm no expert but let's rule some things out. Does it happen when you turn the wheel to lock either way or only to one side? Which side? Diveway flat? or angled up or down? Have you turned your wheels to lock, gotten out and checked to see if your tires are rubbing on anything inside the wheel wells? You said the ball joints and wheel bearing are good. Are they new? How about the tie rods? Could also be the universal joints in the steering shaft. When you say pothole does the car jump/jerk/shudder? That makes me think the tire is catching on something. All the joints mechanical parts might pop, click etc., but I can't imagine them transferring motion to the car. -J

need to identify source...
Thanks for responding...
The slight jerking feel occures only when I back up and while in motion, turn the wheel all the way. the bump/jerk feel occurs in the last bit of the turn. It happens on flat ground as well... The ball joints and bearing are new and installed by a mechanic last year. |

Check the a-arm bushings, the big nut holding the strut cartridge in or the top of the shock mount. Don't take for granted the the mechanic got it right. Look at the ball joint too.

Also, check the front of the arm where it bolts to the suspension pan. These have been known to tear away (partially or fully) if the sheet metal is fatigued or hidden corrosion.
