Advice on Wevo Side plate and Electric Speedo

Anyone install the Wevo side plate with the hall sensor cut out on an early 915 trans with mech speedo? How does the pick up work if its on the opposite side of the trans and the magnets? Im looking for other ways to make my 915/40 trans a hybrid and work with both mech and electric speedos. Is there a way to shift the magnets or differential around to accomplish this? Thanks!

Not much on the wevo site. Will have to email them as inquire how to. Looks like a OEM sensor will fit right in the hole. Seems like the easiest way to get electric speedo sensing and still keep the mech speedo gear.

The side plate with the sensor cutout works because the sensor magnet ring is on the differential on that same side of the tranmission as the side cover. It is indeed intended to accept the OEM Porsche sensor and sensor ring arrangement of parts.

If you email WEVO, Hayden will give you the lowdown. He's a very helpful guy. Just be patient as he's pretty busy and it'll sometimes take a few days to get back to you. That said, sometimes you'll get an instant response.

That said, why get a WEVO side cover. Any 915 cover with the electric speedo provision will work. Although I suspect it's hard to get just a side cover. Usually a whole transmission purchase is needed. But, you'd be surprised how many transmissions are damaged over the years. Lots of people have colllections of loose misc. parts for these gearboxes.

Thanks Kevin. Hayden is a wealth of knowledge. Talked to him a few times about my trans mission and engine choices before I bought them. At the time I was going to get a eletric speedo mag trans so it would drop right in and plug n play with my 86 chassis. Long story short a 915/40 was shipped and delivered instead of a 915/44 which is why Im trying to get the electric speedo with out having to change out the housings and such.

Yeah I was alittle confused when I saw that the sensor was on the plate side instead of the housing side of the trans. Ive only seen 915 trans sensors this way. Im going with the plate and a few other bits to strenghten the mag trans I have for the 3.6 in my RSR project. It will get a aftermarket LSD so Im sure the magnets or diff parts can me found or machined into it. The trans is in good condition so if I were to sell it I would sell the whole and buy a 915/44 or 915/61 mag trans ... but Im not ready to head down that road yet. Still trying to make lemonade, lol.

The XT_225 side cover is a product specifically for the 915 when used in a mid-engine application.

In those installations, where the differential has been "flipped" the magnet ring ends up being on the cover side of the transmission, hence this product which is normally sold to customers who are buying the WEVO 915 SideShift kit for mid-engine installations.

There are less costly / more crafty ways of achieving the same result, the WEVO XT_225 is a simple bolt-on option for those where time is more valuable.

Those lower costs options, normally involving JB-Weld, could be viable for converting the 915-44. I am sure a search will yield some info and options.

Thanks Hayden! Yeah, Im not doing a mid engine application with my 915 trans. Just a 3.6 with carbs and the typical 915 trans mods to handle the torque. I saw this on the site and I am going to be buying a side cover from you guys so I figured it was an added plus if I got that one. It seemed too easy ... lol. Is there any way to use the XT_225and still retain the normal 915 differential orientation? Can the diff be flipped and no other mods done to the trans to use cover? I can use the 915/40 but need electric speedo. I know its going to be a pita to sell it and find another 915/44 for what I got the current one for now. Ive looked around on a few sites but I cant see find any info on what others have done to get the electric speedo on the early mag case much less buying a later mag case and swapping the guts out. I have found a pulse converter from VDO but it is set up for 4 pulse vs the 8 pulse that the OEM speedo wants to see. Anyone have any other ideas or input? Thanks.

Sorry about the mis-info on the location of the side cover magnet ring. I must have had early G50 on my mind (I have both a G50 and a 915 car) that has the magnet carrier on the ring gear/side cover side of the differential.

No worries Kevin.

So its either going to be a pita to convert this or be expensive. More so then getting another speedo of the mech version and a cable drive. Never an easy way. Know I know why no one ever does this, lol. Im going to open the case when I get home and start rebuilding the trans. Thanks guys for the advice.

I thiink Hayden is suggesting you might want to purchase the magnet ring (an aluminum annulus with the eight rod magnets epoxied radially into it), and install that on the right side of your diff - they are all made to accept this ring.

Then epoxy the sender into one of the spaces between the ribs. The case is fairly thin there, and it may be close enough to trip the sender. The sender is just a reed magnet, so you can easily test this notion without gluing anything with the case apart and the ring gear out - just drop the diff with ring in and rotate it while holding the sender up against the case. Hook the sender up to an ohmmeter. When it shows an ohm or fraction of an ohm, and then nothing, you know a magnet has opened and closed (or closed and opened) the reed switch.

I'm not saying this will work, but it is worth a try.

Thanks Walt. I searched for a while on a few forums and didnt find anything informative for how to or any solutions. Ill have to give it a try. Should save me a few bucks instead of sourcing another cable and speedo. Thanks again.
