Another broken Divilar head stud sob story

Is there something wrong with me if I carry one of my two broken head studs around in my pocket? It's the only piece of my 911 that will be with me for the next couple of months. Just when the driving season is ramping up in Northeast Ohio.

Nope. Nothing wrong at all. Just don't admit it to anyone else. They will look at you funny. I, however, understand completely.

sounds normal to me... I still carry around a tooth from the ring gear that exploded on my 77 Skylark...

Thanks for your empathy! It just came to me. While I work through the upcoming repair drama I'll post pictures of the head stud in different locations, kind of like Flat Stanley.

In my office:

...does anyone know if the original dilivar studs they would have used in 1987 coated? I have learned from other threads that today's dilivar studs are now coated to improve corrosion protection.

If you rebuild the engine yourself, then you'll have LOTS of your 911 with you all the time!

Stuck under your fingernails, gooped in your hair, sharp shiny pieces stuck into your fingertips, some of it in your eye...

My 911 and I became intimately acquainted when I work on it...

At least you have your favorite alcoholic beverage next to the broken stud...the 2 go hand in hand for sure....

And the glass is empty also...

At least you didn't fry a piston. That would look goofy in your pocket....

Dilavars, beginning with 1982 production, were coated.

The pictured broken stud appears odd in that I can't see the normal corrosion that is usually present. It also looks like the stud is scratched...???

I will try to get a better picture with more detail. Like a few others I should have had a thorough PPI including pulling the valve covers to find any dropping surprises. It is possible when I bought the car two years ago the dilivars were fine, I will never know. Supposedly a top end rebuild was done at 157,000 and I took ownership at 159K. If a top end was done can't figure why all twelve lower head studs would not have been replaced. Unfortunately I have been unsuccessful in tracking down the mechanic that did the work.

I found all 12 Dilivar studs broken last week. They allowed exhaust gasses to melt the sealing surfaces on the cylinders and heads. I didn't have a PPI either. I have owned the car for 3 years and driven 10 miles. I thought the CIS was responsible for the lousy starting and running. I think I was wrong.
I love the car and am too stubborn to not get it right. Just takes time and money.
If you don't know about your studs find out right now. It's much cheaper.
Now where did I put my beverage?????

That's what I really love about this forum. There is always someone who is suffering the same or more than you. Hey Columbus Indiana isn't that far away. I always have cold beers in the garage!

Note that alcohol always seems to be part of the theme. These cars can lead you to drink!!

I really like to work on my 911 but I know my limitations. Brakes last year, most recently the notorious autoheat system. Broken head studs, way above my pay grade

Yes that is a 66 Bug peaking out of the corner. Now that is a car I can handle...some of the time.

...I ended up splitting the original calipers and had them anodized. Hey I'm hijacking my own thread!

Anodized?

You mean cadmium plated, right?

Zinc coated? The sacrificial coating that was OEM. Good catch!

Looks exactly like my broken stud... no coincidence.

And I thought I was having issues. This was posted in the classified section:
Dilvar Studs - almost nightmare of replacement

Great thread, a sob story with a happy ending.
