Annoying Squeak Under Load

Hey guys,

I am getting an annoying squeak under load after the car is warmed up to normal operating temps. I think it is the fan pulley belt. I changed the belt to a new one and still get the squeak. I noticed glazing on the pulley, wondering if roughing it up would help.

If I am just sitting idle and give the throttle a quick burp it squeaks for a second then goes away. Driving it will squeak under throttle. I am getting really annoyed with the squeak. The new belt I had 4 shims in and 2 out. Slowly moved in to 1 in 5 out now. Still squeaking.

Anyone deal with this or have something similar?

Alternator spin freely with the belt off?
What size belt have you got? One in five out with a new belt doesn't sound right.

A squeak is often either the Dizzy or the Belt(its often difficult to hear which it is)
One way of assessing the belt(or at least what I do) is while the car it running hold a simple bar of soap against the inside of the belt(watch your hands). If the squeak disappears then its the belt that was slipping and needs tightening. That said one shim on the inside and 5 out is as tight as it goes. I changed a belt and it still slipped. Changed it again and it didn´t..go figure

If you really mean only under load, it very unlikely to be belt or dist as these items do not have any mechanical difference loaded or unloaded. They will vary with engine speed and acceleration.
If truly load, look to mounts or possible intake noise.

I should mention that I have a gutted cat. I was thinking intake or exhaust noise due to being after I reach operating temp. I wasn't sure if something we resonating funny in the exhaust or something. All I know is that it is annoying and I want it to go away.

When you remove the dizzy cover there is a felt pad at the base of the shaft that needs lube. Heres a thread

That would be the slight squeak I am hearing that comes and goes? If that's it, I would have never known on my own. Hence the importance of Pelican and it's vast of knowledge. Can I do this in place on the motor or do I have to remove the dizzy from the engine.

I recently experience what i though was a squeaking belt. I also replaced the belt and shifted the spacers more the a few times. The sound would present itself on shut down, at idle and under load.

One day i pulled into the driveway and shut of the car and the squeal just became unbearable. I restarted the car, opened the engine lid and and studied the belt intensely. I put my ear as close as i could get to the alt/belt area, there was no sound coming from this area. I moved around the engine compartment, listening as i moved.

Low and behold... It was the damned oil filter. A piece of crap Hastings Heavy Duty Oil filter.

I promptly did an oil change and replaced the filter with a good one from our host.

Squealing gone.

I was surprised that the filter could product such a sound. I had never experience this on any car i've owned... Then again it was the first time i used a Hastings filter and the last.

An oil filter, geesh. Gives me confidence in being able to find this squeak. I will be oiling the distributor today hopefully and a seeing if that does it.

So squeak is back and I think I may have found the culprit.

Dizzy definitely needed oiled, but the day I drove it after oiling was a colder morning so I was running my heat. The other day was warmer and no heat was turned on. Squeak is back when I do a quick rev or initially under load. I think it is my heater blower mounted in the engine compartment. I am going to get the stethoscope out tonight after work and re-simulate the squeak while listening to the blower. I pulled the tube last night when the engine was a little warm and tried to spin the blower fan. Seemed tight and didn't spin easily. I know from experience those cage fans are almost perfectly balanced and with a little push should spin easily and freely.

Other thing that I had to change. I talked to my mechanic about belts and how with a new 10x710 I was all shims out. He has been working on porsches since he was a teenager. He has informed me that every once in a while he runs into ones that need a 700 and they have the stock pulleys on them. I picked up a 10x700 and it has perfect fit at 4 shims in and 2 out.

Well upon more testing and checking with the stethoscope and found that it was nothing I thought. It ended up being an exhaust leak right at the cat to muffler connection.

sounds like a bearing at one of your pulleys going out.
