Am I the only one who likes the look of impact bumper cars better than long hoods?
I lova all 911 styles...but my favourite is the impact bumper style. Lets see how the stats come out.

I like the look of impacts....On a related note: the funny thing is I liked the 964s the least, but the 964RS has absolutely grown on me after reading the article on them in 911/Porsche World a few months ago.

My buddy and I have this same debate. I dig his early car, but can't get the SC image out of my head that was branded there as a nine year old...
The engines are still in the same place...

'64-'73; 10 model years of the longhood design
'74-'89; 16 model years of the impact-bumper design . . .then look at the production numbers. (it wasn't because they were cheaper) CLEARLY the impact-bumpered 911's are thee iconic 911. (with the 911SC at the pinnacle of design. ) MUHAHAHAhahahaha . .. .oh, and the 993's look pretty good too. ![]() ![]() tho' a little bit too "dainty"

What I like about the impact-bumper cars is that you can do a lot more stuff to them without worrying about destroying an early car. In addition, with the exception of the duck tail, the various tails, splitters and other racing add-ons just look better on an impact-era car. The duct tail looks good on an IB car, but better on a longhood. On the flip side, I like the no-nonsense look of the 911R, and the silver lightweight (name here) has; it's nigh on impossible to execute the same look in an impact-bumper car.

I like the short hood cars much better, but without the bellows. SC with IROC bumpers looks nice to my eye.

I'm torn, they both look great. I suggest get one of each, then decide for yourself.

I own both and am torn on this issue. Long hoods look elegant and clean - more "sporty" like a young colt. Short hoods look more muscular and mature, like a full grown thoroughbred. Both have speed and power, but exhibit it in totally different fashions.
I'm enamored with both, but if forced to chose, I'd lean towards the long hood. Regards,

The popularity of the old long hoods is mostly due to the California smog laws. Back in the mid-90's you couldn't give away a long hood car, they simply were not popular. I'm not so sure they are any more popular today in places other than California.
The money I sold this one for in '95 barely covered what I's spent on the engine alone. Potential buyers told me they did not like the "stubby" look of the long hood front end.

I really wanted to get a long hood car -- because they look so close to what F. Porsche had in mind when he was designing the car. I especially like the rear, with the tucked in bumperettes and that flat panel for the plate.
But the bumper cars have the iconic, Teutonic, "Porsche" look. Plus they represent an incredibly elegant solution to the bumper regs (think about how badly other small, boutique sports car makers -- think MG or Alfa -- did when confronted with the rules in '73). And I agree with island911: The 993 just looks "dainty" to me; I can't tell you why, but it does. ('88 Carrera 3.2) |

Well I am glad to see that there is ONE other person other than myself thatlikes the 964. Nothing better than a widebody 964 Turbo!

The 964 Turbo is my absolute favorite. Beautiful lines and muscular look.
Strange thing is, the 964 narrow body is my least favorite 911. They look lumpy and heavy.

I don't know art, I just know what I like...same with Porsches: the 964 makes me smile a little more broadly than the othe Pcars I've owned. However, the margin of error is plus or minus what I've owned at the time this questioned is asked. It's a Steve Stills thing.

For me, a lot of it has to do with width. I think the original design -- the narrow-body long-hood coupe, is maybe my favorite. Second best for me would probably be the 993.
Oddly (considering the car I own), I think the impact-bumper Turbo might just be better looking than the RSR look. In my mind, a black 75-89 Turbo might just be the ultimate iconic Porsche. I agree with others here that the widebody 964 look is awesome. The 996 still hasn't grown on me, and the 997 strikes me as a 996 with a few of the details fixed, but the proportions still wrong.

I have one of each. Next I need to add the 964, 993, 996, & 997.
I think Porsche did a masterful job of complying with the new bumper laws in the 70's. Most cars got uglier. Here we are, decades later, admiring Porsche's solution. |

longhood, end of story. the most pure IMHO. I do like as Jack said well, the mid year turbos. A 930 like Craigs is awesome too.
