Seat not centered with Steering Wheel
Well, I installed a seat of seats in my car last night (it has been under the knife for 2 years now) and I noticed that the seats are not centered with the steering wheel. I asked a buddy of mine and he mentioned that this has always been a problem with 911's and that the seats won't go over enough to completely fix it. Has anyone tackled this issue? Can is see some of your solutions?

I'd be interested. Canted to the left, very odd feeling.

Isn't the 930 steering wheel off-center to put it on-center in relation to the seat? You could always switch wheels if it is.

Hey Britain,
I do remember reading about a Pelican who installed some new seats and fabbed his brackets to compensate. Only a slight "shift" in the position, but he was happy. Sorry I don't remember the details, but it's in the archives somewhere ![]() -Chris

My one piece race buckets are perfectly centered with the steering wheel. This involved cutting our the whole stock mount assembly and welding in a custom set up.....

Camera on the fritz, but what I did was to weld in some box section pieces across the floor between the rocker and the tunnel, one at the front and one at the back. Then I welded some angle iron to it to form longitudinals that the new sliders mount too. The front cross piece is taller than the rear one to aid in seat inclination. It was pretty simple to do, but I am sure there are more imaginative setups out there. I went this way becuase I did not want to get my welder working on the tunnel where the fuel lines are-heard too many stories about that! Otherwise I would have just welded longitudinals against the rocker and the tunnel much like the factory did and then centered the seat on it. Of course this is much easier with a seat that is more narrow than a stock one.
Cheers,

I hear, long time ago, that the steering not been centered revolved around a safety issue. So this is within the design parameters of the car.Cheers,Antonio.

I have the same feeling. The first impression when I bought my 911 was that I feel like I am facing a little to the right (toward the middle of the car), when I drive.

late 60s most manufacturers placed the steering wheel off to one side for crash protection

I made a custom bracket for our Recaro SPG seat moving it about an 1" to line up with the center of the steering wheel (and the pedals). When your sitting in a tight race seat it makes a difference.

The 914 is weirder, ....surprised? The steering wheel is tilted slightly to the left as if someone out side the car might want to steer it awhile...
Once you are driving though it all seems to come together wonderfully.

Wasn't the old WV beetle steering wheel also off center with the driver's seat? I thought I remember that.

Dragging up an old thread. I just put "new to me" Boxster seats back in my car after 3 years of having the interior gutted and got reminded of the same issue. Steering wheel appears shifted off-center (toward the middle of the car) by ~40mm. Is this somewhat normal?
