Never ends...

Neither even vaguely symmetrical. |
Needed to do all the prep work so I could try and get these to work.

Final version will look something like this....maybe

After a lot of sanding with 220 grit wet the primer was ready for topcoat.
I'm doing this in my garage so there will be a lot of sanding to make sure I get a decent finish. Here is the colour. Not exactly OE! http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1521030200.jpg |
Have learned a lot spraying primer.
But still some way to go. So there is safety in knowing I'm going to be doing a lot of sanding. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1521030535.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1521030535.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1521030535.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1521030535.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1521030535.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1521030535.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1521030535.jpg |
Consistent orange peel!
But the coverage is good. This will get 400 and 600 wet before final topcoat and clear. Although not sure whether I'll go with clear. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1521030757.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1521030757.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1521030757.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1521030757.jpg |

More and more sanding and checking panel gaps.
I must have fitted and removed these fenders over 100 times. I am beginning to realise that my ambition exceeds my ability! The third go I have had at the FBG fender edges. I guess I should have just it properly the first time. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1521101765.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1521101765.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1521101765.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1521101765.jpg I have managed to find the perfect piece of kit for fitting the hood. His name is Finley. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1521101765.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1521101765.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1521101765.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1521101765.jpg Fender edges and hood edges are much better. I can safely say that all FBG parts are not created equal. My advice is to buy the best quality you can afford. These were made by a 'master craftsman' who is putting his name to a brand of South Africa outlaws that have received a lot of press lately..... A bit like those ads that say 'expertly restored, not a cent to be spent' |
Great thread and very cute helper there! He probably has visions of driving the car some day!
|
Incredible amount of work! Keep going, almost there :) :)
|
Great panel gaps Matthew, glad to see you hammering this out! Hopefully I'll have some doors shortly and can start on gaps as well!!!!

Top tip with doors: you can always clamp a 2 x 4, vertically to the door when it's bolted in and give it a twist to make it align!. |
Bought my self one of these.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1521828778.jpg Test on v2. Running a bead down the centre for strength. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1521828845.jpg V2 had the edge worked over in a buck. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1521828888.jpg The final version will be laser cut alu, so I needed to be bit more accurate. |

And it would be great to have a set of tipping dies, to work the edge of the cut-outs. Now have to transfer the drawing to a PDF so the laser cutters can do their work on 1/1.2mm alu. |

School fees! All good now. Good scar though. |
Happy New Year fellow Porsche nuts. Been a while since I last updated this rather long build thread. The good news is that there has been progress.
2018 was a pretty busy year so I only did a few months' worth of work. Most of the time I just couldn't muster the same level of energy as I have over the previous years. Working FBG panels, panel gaps and tiny imperfections etc is exhausting. But that was 2018. This project will be finished by June this year. Hopefully by mid-April if everything goes to plan. |
